What Does Constant Pain In The Right Side Of The Back Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017
Question: I've had a pretty constant pain in my right side, waist level, that's beginning to worry me after about 2 weeks. I wonder if that's my liver...because I take OTC sleeping aids every other night. I don't overdose, in fact I rarely take the recommended dose (only 1/2) but I read today prolonged use could cause liver damage...?

Brief Answer:
Which pill are you taking as sleeping aid?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The level of this pain is unlikely that it is related to a liver disease. Liver related pain is often just under the ribcage. However, I will suggest that you provide the name of this drug so that I can look into to see if a liver affection is a possible side effect.

Also, help me provide more details about this pain such as:
1. What causes it?
2. What makes it better?
3. How bad is the pain?
4. Does it come and go or is it permanent?
5. Do you have any other problem/symptoms?

I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience so as to explore other possible causes and get back to you. In the interim, I wish you well.

it's a generic Pain Relief P.M. sleep aid, Acetaminophen 500 mg & Dephenhydramine 25 mg. I've been taking one every other night, with Melatonin. The recommended dosage is 2.

Sometimes a deep breath catches me up short, triggering an intense cutting pain. It's u-shaped, just like the outline of one's fingers when placing the hand on the waist. Not much addresses it, but if I sit very still and breathe shallowly I'm pain free.

In the past few hours, I've been sitting in my zero-gravity chair quietly. The pain has dulled a bit on the right side, but also shot across my back and down into my rght buttock when I got up to go change clothes. It's not as breath-taking but deeper into the tissue. It's not sharp enough to be nerve-generated, I don't think.

Brief Answer:
I suggest you get an X-ray or CT scan of the lower spine!

Detailed Answer:
HI,

I have reviewed this additional information. Given that this pain travels all the way to the lower limbs, affects both sides of the waist area, I will suggest that you get imaging studies of this area. This will look for possible pressure from surrounding structures on nerves passing through this part of the body to the limbs.

For now, I will suggest you avoid bending over too much, get more of rest and take tylenol only at 1000mg at most thrice daily. When we get the results of your tests, we would be able to further guide our approach and establish an updated plan.

I hope you find this useful and helpful. Let me know what you plan on doing. If there are any further issues you would like us to trash, kindly bring them up.

Kind Regards!
