What Does A Prickling Sensation In Upper Chest Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, I've had this stabbing/prickling sensation around the middle of upper chest - sternum over the past 4 days (once/twice per day). It usually lasts 2-3 seconds and goes away. The pain does not radiate anywhere. No other "heart" related symptoms - i.e. shortness of breath, nausea , dizziness, etc... Ran 4 miles today without symptoms.

I do have some Gastro issues however. So not sure what is causing the symptoms.

My Health Profile -

- Excellent Physical Condition - run 4miles per day 6 1/2 minutes per mile.
- Feel Pretty Good in general with the strict diet. Protein and Vegetables. No sugar, breads, dairy.
- Not a Smoker / Drinker.
- Bad Chewing habits - eat very fast without fully chewing the food. Trying to do better.
- Height 5'6". Weight 140.

Ran today for 4 miles without symptoms (no chest pain / nausea / dizziness, etcc...) symptom free.

All blood work up tests are within normal ranges except the following:

Issues:
1. B12 - low. Started taking b complex supplements. Originally level was 290 mg. Do not understand why. I am not a vegetarian. Which leads me to believe some type of mal absorption issue? After taking B12 complex, level went up to 452 and began feeling better

2. Kidney Function - a bit compromised. Depending on when you take the test. Creatinine level has been measured - on occasion - at 1.5. Normally (most of the time) it is 1.2-1.3. Very tiny kidney stones. No pain.

3. Cholesterol - High HDL = 95 LDL = 150, Triglycerides = 45

5. Heart - had a "million" tests. Other then the "Gold Standard". Everything negative. Passed the treadmill with way above normal results - athlete level. Echocardiogram, Calcium, etc... all negative. Do have a family history of heart issues.

Thanks for the reply.

I can't pin point it to anything. After I eat - anything, it feels like there is some flem and kind of "food stuck" feeling (but very mild) near the esophagus(top of throat). On rare occasions there is regurgitation - again very mild. But considering my diet, I should not have any of these symptoms. Again excessive belching/flutulance, etc...

This is my diet over the past 7 weeks:
- 4 cups of water with some lemon in the morning
- run 4 miles
- Brown Rice Organic - 1/4 dry
- Salad (rudabagas) and some organic protein at night
- Almond Butter + Green Apples for desert :).

No sugar (in any form even fruit), dairy or processed foods (i.e. bread) of any kind. Everything is organic.

I am wondering if I have some type of Candida overgrowth - the breath is kind of stinky and I brush teeth several times per day.

Do you think a Comprehensive Stool Analysis is appropriate to identify the root cause. I am willing to pay out of pocket.
OR
Scope It?

Could it be "Pernicious anemia". For some reason my b12 was really low 290 mg. for someone who is not vegetarian. I started taking b-complex supplements and got it to 450 mg within 1 month (and felt significantly better).

Brief Answer:
Gastritis along with vitamin B12 deficiency

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Its good to see you
After going through the whole discussion, I feel you have gastritis along with vitamin B12 deficiency as the cause of your suffering. This needs blood test like level of homocysteine and to look for large size red blood cell (megakaryocyte) to label it as pernicious anemia.Vitamin B12 is water soluble and is excreted via urine. You should continue with the vitamin B12 shots/tablet.
Regarding gastritis my advice would be to small and more frequent meal. The prescription only drug helpful are Omeprazole along with Domperidone.
For the time being you may postponed the stool analysis and follow the above recommended treatment.
-Hope this helps.
Take care
