What Do Extreme Diarrhea Or Constipation With Abdominal Swelling Indicate Post Liver Surgery?

Question: I am 42 years old. White female, overweight, but generally healthy except for my liver. 16 years ago, I was let go from my place of employment because my boss assumed that I had Hep C, even after my lab report said that wasn't the case. I had my gall bladder removed in 1998. The surgeon, during the operation, had accidentally sewn my bile duct shut, unbeknownst to anyone. I had surgery on my liver because it was unable to drain and as a result my liver had swelled to three times it's regular size. It was so full of stones I had to have a T-tube inserted to drain as many stones out as possible, because my liver was so swollen and full of stones, my surgeon was wary about performing the surgery. After two months, I had a successful surgery, and my liver was draining nicely. Until about six months ago. I started noticing that my liver was swelling quite painfully. Then two months after that, it would swell up even larger, however, it would only last a couple of days and then go away, no problem. Now, here is my issue at present: I'm having these "Spells" , for lack of a better term, and I'll list my symptoms for you: Fever, Chills, Nausea, Swollen liver area, Upper abdomen is extremely swollen, tight, very painful, Extreme belching and flatulence that overwhelmingly smells and tastes like sulphur, massive heartburn, when laying down in bed my chest feels really tight, but I think it's just gas building up in my abdomen. Whenever I do sit up, I start belching extremely hard for a long, long time. And that is very painful. Whenever I throw-up or have a bowel movement there is this yellow foam that always comes out with it. When I am having one of my "Spells" I either have extreme diarrhea or massive constipation . About six months ago, when I started having these issues, my spell would last one day usually. Three at the most. As of today, my spell has lasted 27 days. I haven't had a bowel movement in 9 days, and it's getting more painful each day. I can't think of anything else you'd need to know. Thanks for reading my problem.

Brief Answer:
Bile ducts inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the query.

Do you have any drain or stent in the bile ducts? Have you had ERCP done and if so when it was? When did you have last liver tests done?
In my opinion you do suffer from reccuring bile ducts inflammation. Lack of stool and pain can be also caused by bowels obstruction due to adhesions.
Considering your medical history, most likely your liver is heading to liver cirrhosis and soner or later you will have liver transplant.
For now you should have abdominal x-ray and blood work. Liver tests should be done and ERCP considered.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
