What Causes Ulcer Like Skin Behind Throat And Dry Mouth?

Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: Hi, I have had a feeling of something like an ulcer or bit of skin on the back of my tongue on the underside on the left just before it goes down your throat.. It is not sore just annoying.. I also get the feeling that my uvula is touching the back on my tongue and I need to do a swallow. It feels like my soft pallet is also touching my tongue; This has been going on 4 weeks. I have seen a few GP's who can not see anything and say it looks normal; they have however suggested that I see an ENT so that they can check. I also sometimes get the dry mouth feeling too. My wife has said that I have been snoring the past few months.. sometimes with an open mouth, My sinuses were checked 6 months back and they were ok. I had sinus surgery 4 years ago, (FESS) I am 39 male and not over weight. any ideas, my ENT appointment is not until October! Non smoker non drinker,,

Brief Answer:
I recommend an earlier examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. In both the images, the right side of the song palate is lower than the right.

2. The movement of the palate should be examined.

3. This may be the reason that you feel the palate and uvula touching the tongue.

4. Otherwise, your throat is Grade 3 as per the Friedman Malempatti classification. A dental opinion will also help. A sleep study can be done to check the severity of the snoring and sleep apnea.

5. The exact location of the sore area is not clear. A Videolaryngoscopy and palpation should be done. It is usually an ulcer or a lymphoid tissue hypertrophy. This can be easily treated.

6. There is a coating on the tongue. This may be due to indigestion and mouth breathing (dryness).

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi, the coating is tumeric, sorry I should have mentioned it. I think the soft pallet has allways been lower. All ENT are full and I am on cancelation list. I am going to my GP again tomorrow to see if there is anything I can do. My throat / mouth allways seems dry too. Maybe the dryness is causing the sensations. I also have BFS benign fisiculstion syndrome which causes random muscle twitches and sensations.. The throat / tongue are new for me though.

Brief Answer:
Hope you get an early appointment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The coating is normal if it is turmeric.

2. If the soft palate has always been lower, get the palatal movements examined.

3. If you are on any medication for the BFS, check for side effects.

4. As explained earlier the most common cause are dryness, reflux, post nasal drip and so on.

5. Start multivitamin and mineral supplements (including zinc and magnesium).

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
