What Causes Tingling Sensation And Occasional Pain After Dog Bite?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: Hello - I was bitten by a Chihuahua on my left figure on 09/05/2015. It was the figure next to the pinky. The bite VERY small. It was right below the cuticle and was more like a slight scratch and the size of a pinhead - barely seeing any red.
The dog was up to date on it's rabies vaccination and I observed the dog 12 days after the incident and the dog seemed fine. Then my figure started hurting slightly about a month afterwards - not bad - just a tingle and occasional pain with some occasional pain in my left arm. I called the local health department and they sent someone out that looked ay the dog a little over a month after it happened and checked on it's rabies vaccine and said the dog seemed healthy and the records checked out. I also saw the dog 40 days after the incident and it seemed normal.
Why is my figure tingling then and getting occasional pain? Is there a chance of rabies or am I just being paranoid?

Brief Answer:
Not rabies

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
It seems that the bite has affected the nerves in the local area.
It does not sound like rabies.
I feel it's more like a neuropathy.
Take a simple tablet of methylcobalamin for a few weeks.
It will help you with the nerves.
Best of luck.

I didn't think so either. Since I have had previous burning in the hands and feet and more tingling in the left arm with the occasional pain - should this be something I should be concerned about? To be honest - I could have been experiencing this before the dog bite but focused more on it because of the dog bite.

Brief Answer:
Sound like peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
It's what we call ad neuropathy.
As you have said it's present elsewhere also, testing with a nerve conduction study will help the diagnosis.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
