What Causes Tenderness And Redness In The Shinbone Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: I went to urgent care because I had redness and tenderness on my right shin. They diagnosed cellulitis, gave an injection of penicillin on two consecutive days and put me on oral antibiotics (K Flex and Bactrim). I'm in the middle of that regimen with some improvement, but not a lot. The day after my visit, symptoms developed on my other leg (less severe), but nearly identical as to how symptoms on the first leg developed. I have also noticed a very hard swollen area on both legs--it's very hard and almost feels like bone -- it doesn't give with pressure applied. May not be related, but I also have terrible night sweats and fatigue (this onset was about 7 or 8 months ago). Other than urgent care I'm not able to see my regular doctor until a week and a half from now. Is waiting okay, as long as symptoms don't become more severe or should I get in to see someone as soon as I finish my course of antibiotics?

Brief Answer:
Cellulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Gopal Goel , Orthopedic Surgeon.
With the symptoms you have described , it appears to be only cellulitis, the underlying cause not known. The hard swelling in both legs is a part of the cellulitis or it may be focus of infection.
These cases take time to respond with antibiotics alone. Do a daily dressing with magnesium sulfate and keep the limb elevated on pillows.
I would suggest that you consult your doctor ASAP.
I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to ask any question.
