What Causes Swollen Ear Along With Headaches?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: I developped a huge swollen ear along with a bad headache a couple of days ago. It develppped a few hours after I helped vacuuming behind of all funitures in the bedbug infested housing for about one hour, I washed off my face, head and hair immediately after that. I covered other part of my body while vacuuming. Well, I am atopic and have environmental allergy (dust mites, cat, dogs, cockloaches, tree pollen, and rag weed, so far i know). I went to see my doctor, I had no fever and no sore throat, she said it was allergic reaction and gave me Famotidine 10mg tablet once a day. I am taking it daily and today, my ear was grtting little smaller, but still hot and painful. Deep itchy feeling was gone. I realized a couple of hours ago that my lymph node under the swollen ear was making soft lump, now i am starting feeling my throat is sore and I just started coughing, inner ear started aching. Do I have ear infection?

My doctor has been telling me that my both ear was fogged. I have been having fatigue for a couple of months now, i was prescribed vitamin D 50,000 /week. I am taking it as well.

Brief Answer:
perichondritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.
in my opinion you have perichondritis (infection of cartilage) of the outter ear.
it can be secondary to allergic reaction.
if i were your treating doctor i would have advised
pennicillin antibiotics + anti inflammatory medicines with oral and local steroids for a week.
hope my answers have helped you.
all these are prescription medicines, so consult your doctor and discuss my views with him. Thanks

I want to tell you one more thing, my infection went little more worse, so i went back to the same doctor, they actually looked into your diagnosis of Perichondrtitis seriously and fave me antibacterial shot to make sure my infection won't get worse than now. They will monitor me for the fuol recovery. Your diagnosis saved my ear. Thank you so much and I am glad that you replay my question. Dr. Deepashee,

My headache is a lot better, and my body is feeling much better, but still have spasmic pain in my ear and head, I think antibiotics shot is working, but I worry, my ear still look like the photo below as you saw my first photo on Thursday, you can see the difference between I took the photo right now. I first got itchy pain before my ear started swell on Wednesday afternoon, do you think my ear will heal to the point of normal shape? I also attached my the other normal look ear. How long does it take to heal to look normal? My affected ear is little thicker than my mormal ear this moring when Itouch it.

Brief Answer:
It will heal like normal ear in another 15 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for follow up query.
Your ear will heal and come back to normal.
It will take at least 15 days . Continue the antibiotics.the ear will be little thicker than other ear ,because it is inflamed.
Don't worry. It will gradually reduce.
keep faith. Thanks.
