What Causes Pain And Discomfort In Chest When I Inhale?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jun 2014
Question: Hi there,

For about 6 days now, I've experienced minor and infrequent chest discomfort, sharp and fleeting pains. Sometimes a sense of 'gas like' discomfort as well in the same areas. Typically on the left side, sometimes on right, has gone to back of my left arm a few times. It'll last about 2 minutes then stop. Sometimes feel it when I inhale but not often. It has lessened in last 2 days. I work out and raise my heart rate to 120-130 with walking and don't experience any increase in pain. I'm aware of heart attack symptoms so I don't think that's the case but... I do have high tri-g's and choles which I take lovastatin for. I'm working out but still overweight (40#). I'm 45, with no history of any major illness in family. My question is when I should see my doc because I have an anxiety condition I take meds for and don't want to overreact like I have with other stuff in the past.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. I understand your fears about this ongoing pain and the need to get it addressed before anything serious happens. Great idea/ Thanks as well for the lovely picture.

Your symptoms are not suggestive of any potential dangerous disease of an ongoing disease process. They seem to be more of musculo-skeletal pain that has no potential consequences. I will recommend that you take 1gm of acetaminophen 3times per day and monitor the evolution of thus pain. I a pretty convinced that this would be enough to address this condition. There is no fear for now and seeing your doctor is not very necessary at this time unless something else comes up.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and please do feel free to ask for more question if need be.
