What Causes Low WBC Count In The Blood?
Question: Hi. A recent blood test showed my White Blood Cell count at 101. I'm told this is low. What should I be concerned about?
Brief Answer:
You should be concerned and be under close medical supervision!
Detailed Answer:
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I can understand your concern!
The level of white blood cells you reported is very low and it shows that you are at high risk for developing different and very harmful infections.
You must be under closed medical supervision.
Regarding the cause, it may be due to side effects of different medications you may have taken lately, viral infections that temporarily disrupt the work of the bone marrow, autoimmune diseases, lymphoma ect.
You must consult a hematologist.

Hi again,
It looks like I was given incorrect information by my PA...my white blood count is actually 5.8.
My concern is that my platelat count is 101...what should I be concerned about?

Welcome back!
You mean the thrombocytes are 101 000.
It is called mild trombocytopenia. In these cases you have to check them again and if they are confirmed to be low, then a cause must be found out.
They may be low due to low production by the bone marrow, by excessive destruction or often idiopatic ( without any cause).
In your case I would suggest to avoid alcohol, risky physical activity for bleeding and to repeat them again.
If this persists, then a hematologist will try to find the cause. At this moment you shouldn't fret too much.
Wishing you good health.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
