What Causes Liquid Discharge From Mouth While Suctioning In A Person With Endotracheal Tube?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: This is about intubation tubes. When suctioning through the tube with a saline bath. The saline causes spontaneous emissions from the mouth. Also there is material in the mouth, which doesn't seem to be food but does have substance. What are the possibilities. Could it be aspirant from peg feeding? Could it be fungal material from the lungs (aspergillus ) of what color are fungal balls? Is there a possibility that the tube is cracked. What other information occurs to you during my question. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Following are the possible causes.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your concern.
Following are the possible causes for this problem.
1. Endotracheal tube might not be at its place. It might be pulled somewhat higher due to frequent suction. It may kink or twisted in opening is in the oral cavity.
2. Leakage through cut in th endotracheal tube.
3. Deflation of ET bulb. This causes back flow of saline between tracheal walls and tube.
So better to check for ET position, bulb pressure and ET patency.
And the particles you are telling about might be due to fungal infection. So get done microscopic examination and culture of those particles. Fungal particles are of brown, white mixed colour.
Also get done Chest x ray to rule out pneumonia.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your patient.
Thanks.
