What Causes Left-sided Radiating Pain Between The Leg And Buttock?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 May 2017
Question: Hi. I am having quite a bit of pain in my left leg. It radiates from the left side and up the back to the buttox. It bothers me in my water exercise class and when being very active. It improves with rest and something like ibuprofen. Thank you.

I keep reading that this could be a sign of multiple myeloma. This is frightening me.
I did have a yearly check up in March with complete bloodwork. Everything was fine, but the glucose level was 127. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Sounds more like sciatica!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain. It sounds like sciatica. This is typically a low back pain that travels down the length of one or both lower limbs. This pain is worse when you sit to stool and push hard. It might be caused by a slipped disc between vertebrae of the the back bone. Inmost cases, it responds to pain medications alone and physical therapy. If it however persists, then we will need to get you in and do a couple of examinations.

This is unlikely to be myeloma. This because myeloma causes anemia and proteins would have been seen in the urine during the recent tests done. Because nothing was reported, am not sure there are any reasons for you to be worried.

I hope this addresses your worries and helps. Let me know your take on this. Am always available for more exchanges if need be.

Can this be Sciatica without low back pain?
My lower back is fine. Just wondering.
I feel much better since you've put my mind at ease.
Thank you very much..

Brief Answer:
Yes, it can be!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sciatica is more about the pain originating from the trajectory of the sciatic nerve. The most common origin is the lower back but not exclusively so. Follow up with physical therapy and let us know how you are responding to those measures.

I wish you well and await your updates.
