default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: I have a toddler, Male age 2. He has a fever that comes and goes for the past 2 and a half days. We give him fever reducing medication. He has slight discharge from his eyes and points to them when the fever breaks. Shows discomfort. But seems to be normal when the fever is in check. He has gradually become worse during this day. We took him to his Doctor this after noon and he checked out fine. But now his temp went back up to 100.1. And shows discomfort.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection most likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Fever in a child of 2 years is most likely to be viral. If your doctor checked the child and could not find any focus infection then most likely its viral. You should continue the Tylenol or paracetamol along with cold sponging to lower the fever. It will take around a week for him to recover. For the eye discharge, if its clear transparent with red eye then it can be an allergy or conjunctivitis. If the discharge is thick, curdy, yellow etc then it could be bacterial infection. Eye drops containing ciprofloxacin and tetrahydrozoline can be advised for 5 days. If the fever persists after a week or worsens along with symptoms indicating a focus of infection like loss of appetite, sore throat, earache , diarrhea etc then CBC with CRP/ESR should be done and treatment started accordingly in consult with your doctor.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
