What Causes Discomfort At The Tip Of Penis After Intercourse?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jan 2015
Question: Hi, i recently had unprotected intercourse with a partner who i just met and so I am unsure of her health history. About a day of 2 after, I started feeling something at the tip of my penis. it has been 10 days since having intercourse and the feeling is on and off. It is not discomforting, just a little it of a nuisance. I don't have any other symptoms and there is no sign of any bumps, lesions on the tip. Can this be a urethra infection then? any help would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Possible urinary infection through urethra

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I have read through your query in detail.
Though it looks most likely to be an urinary infection that has affected through the urethra, a sexually transmitted infection cannot be ruled out. For the best treatment it is advised to consult your doctor and take tests for urine culture and STDs if the symptoms persist for more than a week.

We do not prescribe medications but in an emergency you can follow suggestions mentioned below.

If in an emergency then to control infection please take antibiotics Doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 5 days. Please drink lots of water and fluids and pass urine frequently.

If there is no improvement after taking above medications then please get investigated in detail and take proper medications.

Getting tested for STD infections including HIV even in the absence of symptoms is important.

Always use condoms when having sex with partner of uncertain sexual health.

I understand you might have many questions to ask me in the above context. Please send in your doubts so that the discussion might help you understand your problems in a better way.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Thanks for answering my query.

I am trying to assess the situation myself through process of elimination so I can calm my anxiety. If I start thinking that it can be anything such as std related then I'm afraid that my anxiety itself will start getting the best of me. I want to be able to rule out a few concerns such as HPV or any other related std for that matter. Based on the information I have given you about my symptons and the amount of time that has lapsed, is it not possible to make some literal hypothesis about what I can potentially and potentially not have? Also, as you mentioned you think it may be uti however what gives you this idea?

Thank you very much.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Since you mention a slight nuisance feeling, I guess you are referring probably to a slight tingle or some mild irritation in the head of penis region. Since it started 2 days later, the possibility of a bacterial infection is more and such an infection (after unprotected sex) always enters through the urethral opening.

Apart from urethritis (infection of urethra) there can also be sexual infections like chlamydia or trichomonas and these can present with little or no symptoms. Doxycycline works for most of these infections as a first line of treatment.

Conditions such as HPV and Herpes are far too common in any population and only the appearance of rashes should prompt you to get tested for it. So unless you have the rashes, I feel HPV and Herpes should not be a concern.

HIV and Hepatitis B will not cause symptoms from day 2. However, it is recommended to get tested for these at a later date after contacting any HIV helpline in your city. The risk of HIV transmission by unprotected sexual intercourse is about 4 in 10000 and there is no need to worry right now.

Hope your query is answered.

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Thanks for replying so quickly.

At this point, what are the next steps I should take? Do you know if the prescribed medication is an over the counter drug (Doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 5 days)?

Thank you.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Doxycyline might be a prescription drug in your country Canada as it is an antibiotic.

Right now I suggest you drink lots of water to flush out any bacteria causing irritation in the urethra. If the discomfort continues then a urine culture becomes necessary. Results will show if you really need to take the antibiotics.

Getting tested for STDs includes testing for Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, Nonspecific urethritis, Syphilis and HIV is recommended for you.

Basic testing for bacterial STDs as soon as 2 to 3 weeks after the exposure or sooner if you have symptoms and it is recommended that it are retested again at least three to six months later to confirm negative results.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea is best tested after a month form date of probable unsafe sexual intercourse.

Herpes and HIV might be tested after 3 months and repeated again at the end of 6 months.

Hope your query is answered.
