What Causes Dark Bruise On Back Of Thigh?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Jul 2014
Question: I just noticed a very dark doughnut-shaped bruise about 2.5cm in diameter on the back of my thigh and, although there is no pain whatsoever (with or without pressure), I can't remember anything that might have caused it. I'm concerned about the sudden appearance and strange shape. What could cause this kind of bruise?

Brief Answer:
A physical examination with some tests required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

I saw the image of the lesion attached by you. Although it is difficult to judge without a general clinical examination, if I were your doctor, I would suggest a few to be taken actions like :

1) Get a routine blood test like CBC (complete blood count) including a total platelet count and a liver function test including a clotting profile.
2) There is no harm in applying a local antifungal cream over it to see the effect for a day or two.
3) In case it increases or does not start showing signs of regression, you have to meet your family physician / Dermatologist / General Surgeon who might go for a general physical examination of your including the lymphatic drainage areas of the lesion, and might suggest you a wide excision biopsy if need be.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
