Question: Hello Doctor,

I had a very beautiful hand and leg nails. Unfortunately I expanded the side skin of my nails of both hand and leg. It resulted in deformation of my fingers and it looks very odd now. Also due to that I have got bunion in my leg. Overall structure of my leg and hand is changed. Will it be recovered ? I don't feel confident enough to expose my feet and hand. Please help me.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Do not wear shoes, it makes bunions worse. Send pictures.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXXXXX

Thank you for writing in with your query.

I completely understand your concern.

Bunions in your age most likely are due to genetic factors which is worsened by tight fitting shoes/sandals that push the great toe outwards, when this happens over a long period of time, the proximal end of the bones of the great toe bulge out and cause the deformity.

Since tight shoes and sandals directly contribute to the problem, you must stop wearing such footwear completely.

As for your other problem described, that is deformed nails, the nails get deformed usually due to nutritional deficiency like iron deficiency which leads to anemia, or deficiency of some of the trace elements and vitamins.

Another reason for deformed nails is fungal infections.

It would be really helpful if you can upload clear pictures of the deformities including the bunion, without actually looking at the deformities described, it is not possible to arrive at any conclusion or suggest any remedy.

Please do upload pictures so that I can help you further.

Awaiting your reply.

Best regards

Hello Doctor,

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. However I kindly request you to understand my unique problem. My toe finger got deformed and bunion appeared immediately after injury. Also I never have habit of wearing tight shoes/sandals.

I kindly request you to have a closer look at my toe finger in particular. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You seem to have flat feet, that could be causing the deformity.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXXXXX

Thank you for writing back to me with more details and uploading the image.

I have studied the image. It is impossible to ascertain the exact degree of the problem or the factors contributing to the development of Halux Valgus (bunion) without directly examining and studying the X-Rays of the foot.

I do understand that you did undergo some procedure to widen (expand) the skin around the nails, it is not clear to me exactly what was done to expand the skin around the nails, what type of specialist doctor did you get that procedure done from? Did the doctor inject some kind of material to expand the skin?

Please kindly elaborate on the that so that I can confirm if that has contributed to the development of bunion in your case.

Trauma is one of the causes of bunion, and as I mentioned earlier, there many other causes including flat feet, altered biomechanincs of the feet, metabolic disorders such as gout, arthritis etc. And the effects of these factors can be worsened because of ill fitting shoes/footwear.

From the provided image, it does seem to me that you have some degree of flat feet, but I am not sure about this, and flat feet do cause halux valgus deformity.

All this said, I would like to reassure you that it is still not very serious, it looks to be just starting, so with proper orthotic equipment, the great toe can be brought back to its normal position.

You need to consult an orthopedic surgeon and get yourself examined properly to rule out any muscular instability (the muscles responsible for maintaining the position properly - biomechanics), and to find out the exact cause for this problem.

I am sorry to say this, nothing can be done online, you will ultimately have to consult an orthopedic surgeon in person to get the correct treatment.

I sincerely hope this information will be useful to you.

Please do write back to me if you have additional questions, I will be happy to answer your questions and clear any doubt you may have.

Wishing you good health.

Warm regards.
