What Causes Blood In Urine While Suffering From Strep Throat?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,I am 20 years old male, suffering from strep throat for the past 4 or 5 days but never took any medications until the day before when i noticed the change in my urine to red colour and decreased urine output.I started using anti biotics yesterday even though my throat has been feeling a little better but still taking it because of the urinary problems.I am suspecting the infection is affecting the kidney.I did some research online about this but the blood colour and less output of urine is making me nervous.Pls suggest a solution.

Brief Answer:
No role of antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I must appreciate you for being vigilant and taking care of yourself.
Here are my suggestions and answers to you

1. There is no role of antibiotics in the treatment of post streptococcal glomerulo nephritis
2 The treatment would be , anti hypertensives as most patients will have Hypertension. Low salt and low fluid diet. Calorie and fat need not be restricted
3. you can take multivitamin tablets

Here is how you should go about it

1. Please do not self medicate
2. Go to your gp and get urine analysis and blood test for c3, c4 and aslo done.
3. you will need to be on antihypertensives

A close differential for such change in color of urine post infection would be igA nephropathy

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards

Thank you doctor for helping me out.I went to a near by doctor todat for consult as per your suggestion. He did a body examination and prescribed to do a blood and urine test (i didn't mention about the tests you told me do since i thought he would include those too).He reviewed the results and gave cepodem and vamol. He also advised to drink plenty of water.
I couldn't understand the test results but noticed that my platelet count is a bit higher. Not sure the test results based on my present condition reveals any abnormalities since i am already controlling my symptoms by a strict diet.My concern is does the test results be different if i had tested my blood and urine soon after i found out the colour change in urine and not after treating it with a very strict diet ?
Please advice.

Note: I uploaded the test results and prescription

1) it was just above the normal but when i checked it now in my home,it is 134/89.I am suspecting the increase in water intake caused it.
2)No,but he told to come back friday.
3)It is lower than usual as i mentioned.(Around 100 ml). There isn't any noticeable swelling but i have this eyebags which swells often.

Follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back, I am sorry for the short delay in my response. It was a very busy day at the hospital.

Here is how you should go about it

1. Please get C3, C4, ASLO and USG abdomen and pelvis down.
2. It is important that ultra sound is done as red cells in the urine could be because of stone.
3. Puffiness of face points towards renal injury, I strongly recommend 24 hour urine protein test to be done
4. I prefer you to meet a nephrologist instead of a GP

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Brief Answer:
Microscopic hematuria

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back

Microscopic hematuria means that you will be able to see the blood only when seen through a microscope, it could be that you are having microscopic hematuria

You could do two things

1. You could directly consult a nephrologist and he will order the tests
2. You could get the tests done and then upload the tests to me for interpretation

Please follow up with your consultant tomorrow, you could ask him about the suggestions I have made. Stones can exist in the renal system without causing any symptom
