Question: Can I still have PCOS if there is a normal vaginal ultrasound of my girl parts? with high fasting insulin (49), over weight, hair chin growth, no period
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shoaib Khan (12 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
No cysts seen in the ovaries on ultrasound, then no PCOS

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. If an ultrasound of your reproductive system has not reported any cysts in your ovaries, that means you do not have PCOS (poly= many; cystic= cysts; ovarian=ovaries; syndrome=condition). If no cysts were detected, you cannot be labeled to have PCOS.

I hope you find my response helpful and informative. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

then what causes the insulin resistance, weight, chin hair, period problems?

Answered by Dr. Shoaib Khan (13 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Need to elaborately check the causes for insulin resistance, mainly diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

The causes can be various, but mainly have to do with a hormonal imbalance that can be caused by almost any abnormality in your body, for example:

+Chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, etc.)
+Side effect of medications
+Stress
+Being overweight
+Being underweight
+Anemia
+Infection of the reproductive system
+Infection anywhere around the body
+Abnormalities of the reproductive system (E.g. endometriosis, ovarian cyst, etc.)
and a few other conditions.

But the insulin resistance that is also seen is associated with a few conditions and they are:

+Mainly diabetes type 2 (almost 80 % of the times)
+Lipid overload
+Hypertension
+Heart disease
+Metabolic syndrome
+Obesity
+Atherosclerosis
+Cancer (very rare)

So we need to investigate those conditions that cause insulin resistance, as they all can cause a hormonal imbalance and we should have the culprit causing your presentation. So please speak to your doctor primarily about the insulin resistance, and also ask for an elaborate diabetic profile (especially HbA1c).

I hope you find my response helpful. Please do not hesitate to write back to me, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

what is metabolic syndrome...I'm overweight
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shoaib Khan (9 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Hypertension, raised blood sugar, raised cholesterol levels

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

It is a syndrome in which a number of conditions are seen that are: raised blood sugar levels, raised blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels with excessive fat deposition around the waist region. All these need to be present to diagnose an individual with metabolic syndrome. Due to the various conditions associated with metabolic syndrome, once diagnosed it increases the risk for cardiac conditions, stroke and diabetes altogether.

I hope I have explained this in a manner best understood by you. Please do not hesitate to write to me again, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
