Suggest Treatment For Tonsillolith

Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: Dear Doctor, please refer to the attached photo. I could see and sense a white matter accumulated in the inner part of the mouth. This is the second time I'm noticing this with in 2 months. Though I can feel it, it's not paining unless I touch it with my fingure. Last time, it got detached from the skin automatically and I spitted it out. Is this a concern sir? Thanks

Brief Answer:
TONSILLOLITH.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I hadvegone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having accumulation of white matter.

Based on your clinical details and picture, it appears to be tonsillolith (tonsillar stone).

Tonsillolith in your mouth begins when a piece of debri, be it a food particle, piece of mucus or bacteria becomes trapped in the tonsils and begins to decay. This trapping may or may not result in a tonsil inflammation. The area affected will attract other debris, and once enough has been collected, it will begin to calcify and turn into a hard, white formation a tonsil stone. Tonsilloliths may produce no symptoms, or may be associated with bad breath.

I suggest you to do gargling with warm salt water twice daily, make a habit of cleaning of oral cavity after finishing the meal (to prevent accumulation). In case of pain or halitosis (foul breath), you need to see an ent surgeon for its removal.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
non lethal, can infect (tonsillitis, pharyngitis and respiratory tract)

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

As such, tonsilloliths are not dangerous, the condition can be extremely uncomfortable and lead to secondary infections of the tracheal and respiratory tracts. With proper gargling and eating habits, one can get relief from tonsillar stone permanently.

All the best. Take care.
