Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Croup In A Child

Question: Hello

My son is 8 months old. He was diagnosed with whooping cough 3 months ago and it had since been resolved. We took him to the hospital on Thursday night because he was having difficulty breathing and he had a hoarse voice with a barking cough. He had no wheezing at the time but he had a fever. They diagnosed him with Croup at the hospital and gave him dexamethasone steroid. They said to keep him on Advil and Tylenol and that he should feel better within two days. It's Saturday night and he has gotten worse. His fever is still high and we are alternating between Advil and Tylenol every 4 hours. He isn't eating and barely drinking anything. Is this normal for croup? Shouldn't he be getting better?

Our family has a history of viral induced asthma. Should we take him back to the hospital? He is sleeping now but he's in overall bad shape. He can barely cry even and when he coughs you can see that he's in pain. Please advise..

Yes, Croup can have various serious manifestations.

Your baby is not out of Croup.

It's high time that you take him.to a sophisticated tertiary pediatric hospital.

Thank you.

Hello

Thank you for your answer. We took him to sick kids hospital and they are still insisting that it is croup and to let it run its course. He's had a fever since Thursday night and it does occasionally reduce with Advil or tylenol but sometimes those meds do nothing. I would say most of the time he is having a fever. His appetite is very low and he is weak. Isn't he supposed to be getting better? Today is the fourth day with no improvement.

He had croup, which turned into pneumonia, which induced asthma. Baby is really sick. Currently taking Amoxil, Ventolin, Flovent, Atrovent, Prednisone. His wheezing won't go away although his fever has reduced due to the Amoxil I believe. He is still waking up very cranking and coughing mucous. Anything else we can do to help him?

Brief Answer:
It will take time for recovery

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam.

It's important that your child be put on aggressive antibiotics through intravenous route.

The treatment should take place in an intensive care unit.

He is put on an appropriate therapy as of now.

It will take some time for the lung to recover and wheezing to subside.

It will take around a week time for a significant clinical recovery.

Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.
