Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Node In The Neck

Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Hello, Let me first say that I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. Also, I am far from a hyphchondriac as I am not sick very often and I tend to get well quickly when I am. I rarely make myself go to the doc when I am sick. However, I am a wee bit nervous about the following symptoms.
1) Swollen gland or node in my neck on the right side. Also sore to touch...
2) In the past month I have had a pain in my chest that feels like a knife. Only 3 times and it only lasts for 10 seconds or so.
3) Occasional sharp pain in my right ear.

Brief Answer:
Most likely possibilities approximately listed for your reference sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I appreciate your honestly and would like to provide you with my honest opinion on each of the following presentations:

1. Swollen gland or node in your neck:

Could be either of the following-

+A swollen lymph node which could be linked or associated with the sharp pain in your ear indicating an infection
+A lump or growth whether benign or not can only be confirmed with the help of a biopsy
+Abscess

2. Chest pains:

+Could be related to poor circulation or a condition called atherosclerosis in which narrowing of blood vessels takes place, which causes poor delivery of blood to the heart in turn resulting in chest pain. Will require an EKG, 2D echo and cardiac enzymes
+Chest infections
+Gastric related abnormalities
3. Occasional sharp pain in the ear: Will require a visual examination of your middle and inner ear

Honestly speaking, only a physical examination coupled with blood investigations and the biopsy can accurately determine the cause for the presentation, but as you were a little anxious I have given you as much as I could think of at this point in time.

I hope you find my response helpful sir. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

I will add that the ear pain has been very random and only hurts for seconds at a time.
Its all probably random and unrelated to each other but I have a buddy that was diagnosed with Hodgekins Lymphoma with no symptoms other than swollen place in neck. He is in the middle of chemo now and I'm probably a little paranoid due to that.

Brief Answer:
I understand, which is why I recommended the biopsy earlier

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

I understand your paranoia, and although tumors and its likes are less likely than the less dangerous conditions that can cause such a presentation, we cannot rule them out by just a physical examination or oral consultation with a doctor. Such a presentation will indefinitely require a biopsy to rule out conditions like Hodgkin's which is why I mentioned the need for a biopsy in my previous response as well.

Let us hope this is nothing serious, and we can soon confirm that and help you move forward. Make sure you request your doctor for investigations to help determine the cause for the swelling around the neck region at the earliest due to your anxiety.

In the meantime, I am here to help sir. Please do not hesitate to write to me.

Best wishes.

One more thing I failed to mention...twice yesterday within a 30 minute period I got dizzy. I had eaten breakfast and I was just in a department store. Nothing strenuous. I also woke up yesterday and my head was sweaty.
I'll quit bothering you now. Lol

Brief Answer:
Here to help, no bother at all sir

Detailed Answer:
Hi sir.

Not at all sir, I am here to help and so you cannot bother me in any possible way. As long as you have a health related query, I will be here to answer it.

Your dizziness could be brought about by either of the following causes, but without a more elaborate evaluation I will not be able to accurately tell:

+Change in blood pressure levels
+If your breakfast was late, and there was a long gap between your breakfast and the meal prior to that it could be due to a drop in blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia); which would have then been corrected by the breakfast you just had
+Ear related issues (if you had symptoms like itching in the ear region, difficulty with balance, pain around or in the ear, etc.): This could be considered if any of the listed symptoms in the brackets are present
+Heat-related issues: If it was really hot in your region and the weather was causing the presentation

I hope you get better and also hope your doctor works well towards formulating a diagnosis accurately which in turn will help to treat you rapidly and completely for the underlying cause. And I would like you to know that you need not hesitate to ever write to me again, I am here to help and nothing else. :)

Best wishes.
