Suggest Treatment For Skin Rash On Leg

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: I have a skin rash on my left leg, above the back of the knee and now a few inches below it, that has been there for 7-8 days and is still spreading. It's pink. There are no bumps. It probably covers 18 inches or so. It just looks pink as if you applied pressure to the skin or rubbed it real hard. It seems a bit better in the morning but then worse by the end of each day. I am worried because it is not going away. I'd like to send a picture of it to you.

Upload a better photo

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and i have also seen the photograph.

I would like to request you to upload a better photograph. I cannot distinctly see the rash you are mentioning.

Also provide me more information whether it is itchy? Is it unilateral or on both legs?

Regards

Dr. Kakkar,

I have uploaded three more photos. There is not much to see. The rash -- or perhaps i should say discoloration -- is itchy.

In terms of appearance, it is pink. There are no bumps or blisters. There is no "scaly" feel or texture to it. It just looks pink as if you'd rubbed your skin really hard.

It is only on the one leg shown in the pictures. I have do have allergies to mold (dank weather), pollen, dust, grass, trees, etc. However, this sort of discoloration is not a problem I have had before. My allergies usually just result in a runny nose, sore throat, a light fever if they are severe, and lethargy.

I have not changed shampoos or detergents recently. And I don't recall eating anything unusual.

I thought the rash/discoloration would be gone in a couple days and I could ignore it. However, it has not been on my leg for roughly 8 days.

Thank You,
XXXXXXX

Sorry. That last sentence should have been, "However, it has NOW been on my leg for roughly 8 days."

Thanks Again,

Brief Answer:
Possibly this is a fungal Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thanks for the follow up pictures. Judging from the distribution of the rash and its unilateral distribution and after having a close look at the photograph, this most likely is a fungal infection. In some of the pictures I can see that there is very fine scaling along with redness.

If I was the treating doctor I would have suggested a topical OTC antifunga e.g Clotrimazole 1% cream, to be applied twice daily for 4 weeks

An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine would provide you symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards
