Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: I had my first child 3 months ago and for the past week I've been having searing sharp pains in my right lower calf muscle when moving causing me to limp. Not bad in the morning but agonizing as the day wears on. What's going on?

As the mother needs the prenatal vitamins and the Iron, same way she needs the vitamins and nutrients, Iron and good diet after the baby is delivered.

It is very common now a days especially in modern works where everything is to be taken care of by the mother herself. Baby is the other name of increased responsibility and workload.

Don't worry, it is curable. You need to take the post-natal vitamins and start the Iron. Meanwhile go for some blood work too.

Blood work needed:
CBC with ESR and Differentials.
Serum Proteins.
Serum electrolytes.
Complete Serum Iron profile testing.

Due to lack of nutrients, electrolytes and fluids deficiency and sometimes due to anemia, there is pain in the muscles of the peripheral area of limbs. It worsen with passing time of the day means you are deficient of nutrients.

Take Pedialyte and start taking plenty of fluids and water.
Don't Take beverages and caffeinated drinks, junk and fried foods.
Take more of the vegetables, fruits, salads.
Green leafy vegetables, Salmon fish is good for you.
Avocado, Kiwi, spinach are the must haves.
Take almonds and walnuts, cashew and other nuts that are full of Iron and other minerals.
Apply Bengay Ultrastretch gel on the painful area and massage gently.
You may take Excedrin for pain if needed.

You will start feeling better in a couple of days.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you in no time. If satisfied here, please give a generous five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.

Thanks for your timely response!

Just wondering if there are other symptoms to keep an eye out for if suffering from a deficiency? I'm exclusively breastfeeding at the moment and itd be interesting to see what I've been writing off as just general aches and pains.

Also, does this affect the little one at all? What measures do I need to take to make sure hes healthy too?

Thanks so much

Brief Answer:
Yes there are other symptoms too to keep an eye on!!!

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you back with a follow up query!

Yes, keep an eye if you feel pain in neck and shoulders, thighs and abdomen; if you feel shortness of breath or difficulty breathing on exertion or climbing stairs etc.

Breastfeeding also takes the nutrients off of the mother. Thats why I asked you for proper healthy diet for you.

No it will not affect him much as he is taking his full diet out of the breast milk and breast milk is a complete diet for the baby.

He is healthy and OK and ask his Pediatrician if he is fulfilling his developmental milestones in a timely manner. If yes, he is fine and no worries. If he is lagging behind in developmental milestones, have less percentile of height, weight and head circumference then it means that there is some issues. Mostly we necessarily give Polyvitamin and Iron supplements to the babies too. Ask his Pediatrician for the same.

Always write my name in start of your question in future, and I will get back to you in no time.
