Suggest Treatment For Severe Dizziness And Hand Tremors

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: These symptoms began sometime ago, but were mild and I did not put them together as a real problem until now.

I stumble, fall, list to one side. If I bend over I fall or almost fall. If I lean backwards, I fall or almost fall. Sometimes my feet get to going faster than I can keep up. I get dizzy getting up to fast or when I lean back and look up.

I have also started spilling things or knocking them off. It seems that when I go to set a glass down on my chair side table, I drop them before I set them down or I miss judge how far my hand should go.

I am wondering if these symptoms could be from an inner ear problem?

I also have Lateral Neuropathy on my left leg. For years I have had numbness in my upper thigh. Pins and needles. I know that left unattended it can cause problems such as, feet and brain losing connection from time to time. So, I am wondering if this could be the problem. However, I can't see the neuropathy causing some of my symptoms. I should also mention that my hands shake.

Please let me know what to do. I am a 100% disabled Veteran, and my VA Doc just started me on Gabapentin.

Probably not related, but I am starting to have problems finding words I want to say, and am not completely understand normal conversations.

My Mother died from Alzheimers. Could this be the start of that?

Thank You So Much

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.

First, I don't think this is the onset of Alzheimer disease. Your memory seems quite intact judging by the mail message.

Second , I agree with you. It may not be all explained by neuropathy, especially the vertigo and shaking of hands , especially the latter.

You have shaking of hands, balance issues, especially on bending forwards. There's associated dizziness and dropping things and judging things.

The possibilities that come to my mind are
a. cerebellum involvement
b. parkinsonism .

I will like you to meet a neurologist. For both these conditions, one needs to be examined. A brain imaging may be needed thereafter.

Fortunately , both conditions can be controlled with suitable medications and physiotherapy in most cases.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Please feel free to contact me for further details.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
