Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough Leading To Vomiting

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Dec 2014
Question: I thought I had a head cold; sinus congestion (yellow), crusty eyes. On Thanksgiving I started vomiting any time I ate solid food, so I have been eating soup. I now have a sore throat, am coughing until I vomit, and last night vomited soup. I am either too hot or too cold but don't appear to be running a fever, and now my upper chest is starting to hurt.

Brief Answer:
Acute Sinusitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The symptoms described by you seems to be related to acute sinsuitis. The vomiting could be due to thick secretions getting stuck in the throat, making you to gag and vomit or secondary to acid reflux from the stomach into the throat. Both the above problems can also cause cough.

My suggestions to you are;
1. Drink plenty of warm water.
2. Do steam inhalation 2-3 times a day.
3. Try using saline nasal spray.
4. A mucolytic such as Ambroxol or Bromhexine is beneficial in relieving the thick secretions.
5. Try taking Domperidone, this prevents nausea and vomiting.
6. Avoid chilled food and beverages, coffee and smoking if any.

If the symptoms do not improve, please consult your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.

I've been using a saline nasal spray and taking several hot showers for the steam. They have not helped at all; at times making it to where I could not breathe at all for several seconds.

My concern is that I have a history of pneumonia and whooping cough. I did not run a fever either time, but both started out similarly to this sinusitis/head cold. The only difference was that I did not vomit when I ate soup before.

My boss and daughter both feel I should go to the emergency room to be checked out. I am hesitant to do so.

Brief Answer:
If the episodes of vomiting are more than 3 in a day, go to ER...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

Oh! You had Whooping cough before. Don't worry! It is very unlikely for the Whooping cough to recur.

You can use OTC nasal decongestant such as xylometazoline along with saline nasal spray, for not more than 5 days. Avoid using oral decongestants, it increases the consistency of the secretions. Ambroxol will give you good relief. Domperidone can be tried to reduce vomiting.

If the episodes of vomiting are more than 3 in a day, it would be wiser to visit ER.

Hope this clarifies our doubts. Wish you good luck and speedy recovery.
