Suggest Treatment For Recurring Fungal Infection On Skin

Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2015
Question: Hi,
I suffer from recurring fungal infection of the skin. I had once consulted a doctor and she prescribed fluconazole tablets and Terbest ointment. It gives temporary relief but it reoccurs every 3 months or so. Is there any permanent way to get rid of it? Is it something in my diet or habit that makes it reoccur?

Kindly help.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi
Good morning!
I went through your query and sorry to know that you had a recurrent fungal infection of the skin despite of taking Fluconazole and applying Terbest ointment.
May I ask you a few things like
1. What is the site of fungal infection I mean which part of your body was affected?
2. Did you complete the course of the prescribed medications as advised by the doctor?
3. Do you have any medical illness like diabetes or take some medications like steroids?
4. How often do you take bath or change your socks or undergarments?
Awaiting your reply to give useful suggestions.

Best regards.

Hi,
Following are the answers to your question -
1) The infection is mainly in the groin area but sometimes spreads to the neck region and temple.
2) I did complete the course the 1st time which was around 2 years ago. After that I never went back but use the same medicines whenever there is an infection.
3) No I do not have diabetes and I am not under any other medication.
4) I take bath everyday and change my undergarments also everyday.

Hope this helps.

Brief Answer:
Take the antifungal medications with certain precautions.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi
Good morning!
Thanks for your reply.

After having gone through the follow-up query, it seems to me you have fungal infection of the skin predominantly affecting your groin (Tinea cruris) and sometimes the neck and the temples also.

It is the moist or dampen area of the skin folds in the groin that favors the growth of the fungus even the infection is being eradicated & hence responsible for the recurrence.
At the moment I would suggest you
1. To take ointment/cream containing Miconazole or Clotrimazole to be applied on the affected area twice daily & keep the area dry for 4-5 hrs after using it
2. It's important to continue with your treatment for up to 2 weeks after your symptoms disappear.
3. Wear loose-fitting cotton underwears
4. Wash all bed linen regularly to get rid of any fungal spores & washing all linen and any clothes that have touched the head in a hot wash if anyone in your family has scalp fungal infection.
5. All the family members and close personal contacts should be treated for having any fungal infection
6. In addition to above consider using an anti-dandruff shampoo, like Selsun Blue in the groin area twice a month. Lather up and leave it on the skin for about five minutes, then wash off completely.

I hope the suggestions given above could be useful in preventing the recurrent infection caused by the fungus.

Best regards.
