Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Hidradenitis Suppurativa In Armpits

Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: Hi I have reoccurring HS or Hidradenitis suppurativa in armpits and have had surgery and would like to know if a course of 10 weeks of combination clindamycin 300 mg twice daily and rifampicin 300 mg twice daily will be an effective treatment of HS. I also take Envas 5 for High BP and Nexito Forte for depression. Would there be adverse effects of mixing these drugs? I am aware of the stomach related side effects of both antibiotics and want to know if taking youghurt and other gutt strengthening meds would help with these as well.

Brief Answer:
Treatment of Hidradenitis suppurative; oral antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query.

It is believed that the inciting factor in Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is follicular occlusion and bacterial colonization is secondary to it.

Antibiotics are often part of the treatment plan of HS. Antibiotics can fight infection, prevent HS from worsening, and stop new breakouts.

Yes, I my view a doctor can definitely use the above said combination of clindamycin and rifampicin as part of treatment of HS.

Lactobacilli spores can be taken prophylactically along with these antibiotics to prevent any possible gut disturbance.

Yoghurt would certainly help

Thanks Dr Kakkar!

What about the reaction of those antibiotics with my BP and antidepressants? If I take them for a period of 10 weeks ( usually prescribed for HS), will there be any adverse reactions between drugs?

Brief Answer:
Interactions are present

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Rifampicin and Enalapril might induce each other's metabolism therefore reducing efficacy.
Similarly Rifampicin and Escitalopram may also induce each other's metabolism.

However, if your treating doctor feels that you would benefit from this combination of oral antibiotics, the solution could be that your Blood pressure medication and Antidepressants can be substituted with alternatives that don't interact with these antibiotics, after consultation with your internal medicines specialist.
