Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough, Fever And Lack Of Energy

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: My daughter (age 10) has been home sick a few days with a persistent cough, mild fever, lack of energy. Our doctor said it is likely viral, strep tests came back negative. We were using Triminic but the cough was getting worse. This morning we gave her DayQuil and she took a nap. She woke up 4 hours later with little coughing but a red, itchy, bumpy rash on her lower legs. Could this be a reaction to the DayQuil? Should we go back to the doctor or just stop giving her the DayQuil and seeing what happens in the next few hours. Should we give her a dose of Benadryl? She does have seasonal allergies.

Brief Answer:
It could be an allergy - please give Benadryl

Detailed Answer:
Hi... it could be an allergic reaction to the medicine. There is no way to be sure about it now. But as this rash has started after giving the particular medicine, please stop it.

At the same time please give Benadryl also at the appropriate those. You are right on this.

To suggest on whether you need to approach your doctor immediately or not - I need some more information. Please answer the following questions -

1. Can you please upload an image of rash?

2. Is she having any stridor a noisy breathing?

3. Are there any joint pains?

4. Is there any severe abdominal pain?

Please get back to me with answers so that I can guide you better. Please do upload images of the rash if possible.

No nosy breathing.
No aches or pains.
It has been over 5 hours since the dose of DayQuil and the rash is starting to fade.
I will give Benadryl and see if there is any change.
No able to upload a picture but it looks like small red bumps on the backs of her legs below the knee joint, she said it was itchy, it is still itchy but the bumps and redness have gotten better in the last hour.

We have Children's Benadryl in the house in case of mild allergic reactions, I will give her a dose of that.

I will switch back to the cold medicine we were giving her before but I don't want to mix the two - should I wait a few hours before giving the cold medicine.

Thanks,
I will wait until after the Benadryl to see if the rash is gone, if so we will switch back to the other cold medicine for bed time.

I assume that we will need to put DayQuil on any lists that ask if she is allergic to any medications from now on.
