Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cold, Nasal Congestion, Fever And Cough

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,

I have been having common cold symptoms since one week. It started with only running nose for first few days (no fever and body ache) and I continued to help it with some home remedies like ginger tea, Ayurvedic tablets etc.

From last 2-3 days, I have started having throat pain while swallowing. As a result my voice is little modulated as well. I am having nose congestion, more so in the mornings. Please note that I do not have fever, body ache and running nose and don't seem to have cough either. However throat pain while swallowing is troubling me.

Please suggest some medications. Thanks for the help.

Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of throat infection.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Hi & Welcome.
I have gone through the history given in your query.
It seems to me you have some sort of throat infection (?acute pharyngitis) following an attack of common cold (influenza).
I would suggest you to take tab Amoxicillin 500 mg and Clavulanate 125 mg combination twice daily for at least 5-7 days. Along with antibiotic you also need a anti inflammatory drug like Ibuprofen 2-3 times daily to reduce the throat pain while swallowing. For nose congestion you may take take Levocetrizine once at bed time.
Besides the medications, a frequently done XXXXXXX warm saline water gargle will also bring symptomatic relief from throat symptoms.

Hope to have answered your query.
