Suggest Treatment For Muscle Spasms In Neck, Shoulders And Back

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,
I've been having a lot of muscle spasms in my neck, shoulders, and back, and spine issues. My neck xrays and MRI showed straightening of cervical spine, in fact it is curving the wrong way...I did PT for my severe shoulder/neck spasms and loss of right arm strength. However, the MRI did not show a slipped disc. I ended PT over a month ago, but I am in a lot of pain again. I have quite a lot of swelling on my upper back, close to where the neck ends, and that is where most of my pain is (I do have lower back pain too, just not as much). But, my whole back has muscle spasms now. I feel that my pain is worsening too rapidly (over the course of less than half a year, probably about 5 months). I have not had a full spine xray or MRI yet. I've been walking with a limp recently. I tried running today, and realized that I'm putting most of my weight on my left leg, so much that it hurt my knee today. I'm wondering why this could be happening. I'm only 23. Spine problems do run in my family. I also had a question about the MRI I had- I only know some general anatomy but there's a part at the very bottom of the image that does not look (to my untrained eye) like the rest of the spinal cord. II am curious about it, so if you could perhaps look at the image I am going to attach, and tell me if I should mention it if I go to the doctor, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You might require a detailed MRI evaluation depending on symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. There is mild loss of normal curvature of the cervical spine and you might be aware of it. There is no slipped disc but some of the upper discs show slightly less water content when compared to the rest.

2. I agree with your untrained observation and there appears to be abnormal hypointense signal in the thoraic portion of thecal sac posterior to the spinal cord.

3. The above observation cannot be accurately commented up to on a single image and the rest of the images and if required then a dedecated MRI scan of the area is to be done after a discussion with the neurologist. A full spine screening will be a better choice.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
