Question: Hi,
My wife has just delivered a baby boy and he is identified with Fronto ethmoid encephacely (small part of brain is herniated from forehead) & colpocephaly (lateral ventricles are highly dilated). Is there a ayurvedic way to cure it. what kind to life will my son have? I can i get him treated as I have already consulted many doctors in XXXXXXX and none of them are too optimistic about his prognosis.
Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Encephalocele

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your concern and following is/are recommended guidelines:

1. The anomaly (fronto- ethmoidal) is second (16-17%) to occipital (75%) failure and since being a birth defect following should be taken into consideration:

i. If the said encephaly is associated with any other genetic syndrome in boy then prognosis is limited.

ii. If the birth defect was due to non genetic cause like: maternal rubella, diabetes, blood thinner then again nothing can be done.

iii. Since herniation is there, so if the doctor/reports say there is absence of brain tissue in the herniated sac it carries a favourable prognosis.

iv. Since it is a structural/anatomical problem thus Alternative Medicine will not have any good health impact on the boy, best treatment is to remain under regular and constant supervision of your attending neurosurgeon.

v. Best can be done is:
. Physical therapy to prevent contractures
. Behavioural therapy to improve motor functions
. Definite will be stem cell therapy.

Thanks Doctor, Also, his lateral ventricles are highly dilated. Almost 18 mm. What does this indicate, how will this affect his growth? My primary concern is whether my baby will be able to walk and communicate? I dont expect him to be as intelligent as other normal kids. Also can you please suggest some good neurosurgen in XXXXXXX for the same?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Ventriculomegaly

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. 18mm means there is severe ventricle dilatation and most common effect will be developmental delay.
2. Since ventricles are associated with CSF flow thus dilatation means there will be increase CSF pressure which at his age may include headaches, vomiting, nausea, seizures, papilledema, sleepiness or coma with life-threatening brain stem compression
3. If this pressure is allowed to increase it can injure the brain thus adversely affecting thought and behaviour.

PS. Recent studies have shown following results/reports:
i. short-term memory loss are common
ii. People tend to score better on verbal IQ than on performance IQ.

4. Since I'm not well acquainted with doctors at XXXXXXX you have to do some goggle search or find one at the HCM site itself.
