Suggest Treatment For Fever, Constipation And Frequent Urge To Urinate

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Oct 2015
Question: I'm 37 years old, male. 3 days back I had a mild fever and 2 days back it somewhat subsided but I had constipation and frequent urge to urinate. There is lit bit of pain and urination is not normal it was reddish sometimes. I took laxative and drank lot of water but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Historically I didn't have any such problems and this sudden issue seem to point to urinary tract/kidney infection. Should I take antiseptic drug like Methenamine and antibiotic drug like Nalidixic Acid? If so, what how it should be taken and if not what are the alternatives?

Brief Answer:
Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
You have symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI) like frequent urge of micturition ,dysuria (pain) & reddish urine at times.
Do you have any fever also?
You should go for urine routine examination and urine for culture/ sensitivity test.

Pending report one can start an antibiotic ,preferably nitrofurantoin orally ( standard dose 100 mg bid x 5–7 d) since the bacterial resistance (particularly E.Coli-the commonest organism of UTI) to nitrofurantoin remains low.
You can stop lactulose.

Take plenty of fluids orally at least 2 L/day, as it will improve 'hydrokinetic' defence by increased urine flow rate, causing dilution of organisms within the bladder, and by frequent voiding, which also flushes the urethra and helps to prevent ascent of organisms into the bladder.
