Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: My grandson, who is 3, has had a cough on and off the last week but yesterday seemed to be feeling unwell. This afternoon he started to get a temperature and was given panadol and nurafen in between. His temperature was 36.8 in the early evening but has just gone up to 38.4 in the past half an hour. He as been given some more medicine to bring down. He is in bed but very restless and is coughing. He was seen by a doctor last night and was given a script for antibiotics which he has had one dose. I just wanted to get your opinion if he should be seen again by a doctor or wait and see how he goes through the night, He did bring up some fluid this afternoon because of the coughing. Thanking you.

Brief Answer:
Syrup containing antiallergic and bronchodilator will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Fever with cough and cold can be due to upper airway infection or lower airway infection.
The lower airway infection causes increased respiratory rate or retraction of chest.I would like to know if he has these symptoms.
In case of cough which is severe enough to cause vomiting;cough syrup containing combination of antiallergic like chorpheniramine and decongestant(to open the sinuses)like phenylephrine will help. The restlessness can be due to spasm of airway and drugs(like salbutamol syrup) to relieve the spasm should be given.
Children of this age are prone to infection with viruses or atypical bacteria.
Antibiotic is not needed in viral infection but if physician is suspecting bacterial infection Macrolid(like azithromycin) works well.

I would suggest you get the cough relieving medication prescribed by your physician.
Prefer to give panadol(acetaminophen) for lowering the temperature as it is safer than nurafen(ibuprofen).Give ibuprofen only if temperature is not coming down after half an hour of giving acetaminophen.
You can observe the baby and if there is disturbance in sleep or increased respiratory rate;I would suggest you to consult your physician immediately.

I hope this helps.
If you need any further help or you have any doubt please let me know.

Regards
