Suggest Treatment For Excessive Tearing And Pain In The Eye

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: Hi, my 33 year old son has tearing and pain in one eye, especially around the bridge of his nose. The pain is bad enough for him to have been unable to sleep the past couple of nights. He is also feeling generally unwell, but no fever. He saw a nurse practicioner yesterday who diagnosed a sinus infection and prescribed amoxicillin, Mucinex sinus, and a nasal spray. He is still feeling unwell today and his eye is still painful. Apparently the antibiotic takes 48 hours to kick in. Should he see an opthamoligist? The weekend is coming up and he has a new job, so there is some urgency. Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I've gone thorough the query in details, and below are the details :

1. Please Withhold the nasal spray at present if it is a steroid spray. Request for a prescription of an anti-inflammatory, painkiller, an anti-allergic. Steam inhalation and an OTC nasal decongestant drops (eg. 0.1% Xylometazoline) should be used.

2. If there is no relief in a few hours, though this seems to be a sinus related pain, he should rule out the following conditions also: Eye related pain, minor skin infections, dental pain due to a wisdom tooth or jaw joint and migraine.

3. Imaging and nasal endoscopy is usually helpful if the symptoms persist or recur.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
