Question: Hi im 19 years old (I often suffer from thrush) for a number of months now my vagina has been incredibly soar during sex. It started off when I was in agony any time the top wall was touched. I didn't do anything about it and it continued to get worse so I eventually went to the doctor who said I had cuts at the front of my vagina so she gave me medication and told me not to have sex for 3 weeks. I did this but it never really improved. I went back to my doctor a number of weeks later and she couldn't see any problems. It gradually improved but never went away fully, i learned to cope with the reduced pain. But now it's worse than ever. Anytime I have sex my vagina is tight and stingy, it's incredibly painful and I can't have sex for a long peroids. Now anytime my boyfriend goes near my vagina i get tense and worried. I'm scared every time I have sex im causing more problems and it could cause lasting damage to my vagina. I don't know what to do. Does anybody know what the problem might be and how I can fix it?

Brief Answer:
Fungal infection likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Severe pain in the vagina during intercourse can be due to infection like fungal infection or thrush or can be due to trauma.
In your case, it seems to be fungal infection.
I will be suggest you to get your vaginal smear done so that the exact organism can be isolated and further management should be done accordingly.
Treatment for appropriate duration is required to completely treat the situation.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
Can be vaginismus

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, you should get examined for any cuts in vagina.
If these are also absent, then vaginismus is likely in which one has severe pain during intercourse.
In that case, appropriate treatment in the form of hormonal medications and pain modulators are advised.

what is vaginismus caused by? and can a regular GP give m a prescription for it?
will I have to live with it or should it go away?
In what way will hormonal medications and pain modulators cure it?
Thanks for all your advice it is a huge help.

I have researched about it and I strongly feel I don't have it because penetration was not always an issue only the past couple months. Also even not have sex it is often discomfortable. Is there anything else it may be?

Brief Answer:
A trial of estrogen cream is advised

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
The cause of such vaginal pain is infection, vaginismus or cuts in vagina due to intercourse
If none of these is there, then the only diagnosis is vaginal pain due to nerve disorder.
I will suggest you to take a trial of estrogen cream, if all the fungal and bacterial infections are ruled out. This will definitely improve the lubrication and blood flow in vagina, and might lead to improvement in symptoms.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
