default
Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: I had sex with my husband 4 days ago. It was more penetration or rougher than the usual. I am post menopausal. The next day I started having abdominal cramps, and it has been going on every since. It is somewhat relieved by Motrin. But does not seem to be getting a lot better.

Brief Answer:
Urinary tract infection or uterine infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Abdominal pain caused by rough intercourse can be caused by urinary tract infection or uterine, ovaries infection.
Due to rough intercourse some bacteria could get inserted to urethra or even to uterine (however this is rare).
You may have also lower abdominal pain, fever, frequent urinating, burning while urinating, back pain with both issues.

It is also possible that your symptoms are not caused by recent intercourse. Please note that cramps can also indicate some problem in the intestines. As you are over the age of 50, colon cancer alertness is necessary.

I suggest you to consult your regular doctor at first. Blood work(elevated WBC and CRP indicate infection), urine analysis and abdominal ultrasound should be done at first. If no infection in the urine will be found, you should consult gynecologist as a next step.
If you have lost any weight recently or you get bloated abdomen, gas and stool obstruction, nausea along with mentioned cramps, abdominal X-ray should be also done and colonoscopy considered.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
