Suggest The Ideal Dosage For Bactrim Taken For MRSA Skin Infection

Question: I fell on a piece of rusty pipe a little over 3 weeks ago. The emergency room doctor put in stitches and gave me 7 days of Cipro. It has not healed so my primary care dr. put me on sulfa/trim 800/160 3times a day for 15 days starting yesterday. I now have a large boil under my arm so I think I might have Mersa. Is this the correct dosage or should I go back to him? I am a healthy 62 yr. old female. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
800/160 mg twice/daily for 7 to 14 days is the standard dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First, you mean MRSA ( methicillin-resistant-staphylococcus-aureus ), right?

Standard dose is 800/160 mg of bactrim twice/daily is an appropriate dose when MRSA skin infection is suspected or diagnosed.

Higher doses (1600/320 mg of bactrim twice a day) could be prescribed in more severe cases too.

I think you should discuss again with your Doctor about dosing.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you for your helpful answer. Will the Bactrim clear up this very painful boil-like lesion under my arm?

Probably yes.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

The boil-like skin lesion is most likely to be caused by infection in your case, so, bactrim should help in this case.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
