Suggest Remedy For Watery And Smelly Diarrhea

Question: Hi my 13 month baby has had a watery smelly light yellow diarrhoea for 4 days. Then she became constipated with hard ball stool so I gave her Osmolox twice, today she again has diarrhoea with 6 light soft green poops
but the last one was very little light pink/ yellow mucus like stool. She is also slightly hot to touch so might have a little fever. But she is teething as well so she has been taking panadol or neurophen a couple of times during last week. Do I need to worry or wait for it to resolve by itself? Thanks a lot

Brief Answer:
Give her ORS

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on HealthCareMagic.

I have gone through the details provided by you. I do not think that you need to panic. You may wait for it to resolve on its own. Generally such diarrhoeal episodes resolve in a few days time. All you need to do is to give ORS to prevent dehydration.

OsmoLax is an osmotic laxative that contains macrogol which relieves constipation. If given more, it can cause some amount of osmotic diarrhoea.

The slight increase in temperature indicates an infection which she could have picked by putting different things in mouth, which is common during teething. The foul smelling diarrhoea also indicates the same. Greenish stools indicate rapid transit through the large intestine and you need not worry about that. Unless you think that the stool has blood staining, you need not worry. Just give her adequate amount of ORS to replenish the salt and water lost. Give plenty of curd or yogurt. Give her panadol or neurophen to relieve the temperature.

Brief Answer:
High fibre diet.

Detailed Answer:
I understand. Children with constipation often have a tendency to alternate between constipation and diarrhoea. You will have to give her a fibre rich diet and may be osmolax or fibre supplements in less quantity. In cases of constipation, glycerine suppository may help in making the child pass stool.
