Suggest Remedy For Severe Burning Sensation In Feet

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: I have terrible burning in my feet, or what you would call diabetic nerve pain, though I am not a diabetic. I grew up in all my working days standing on concrete floors on high heels, doing floral design, and when I did not do that, I was in restaurant management, again, concrete floors, but shoes, no support. The pain is unbearable. I take 800mg Gabapentin, but it wears off quickly.
Is there anything else out there that treats the pain of this?

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
You have said that you are non diabetic, but did not mention the blood reports.
From your history, this seems like a case of peripheral neuropathy, however there are many causes and some have to be ruled out to reach the diagnosis.
Diabetes, alcoholism and smoking are very common causes of neuropathic pain and these have to be ruled out. Also, there are chances of plantar fascitis also.
I need to ask few questions like does this pain occur mostly in the morning while getting off bed and reduce throughout the day to some extent and also is there pain in the sole too?
Kindly reply so that I can tell you further regarding pain reduction.
For now, you can continue taking gabapentin, you can also add mecobalamin or nortriptyline to it after getting prescribed by your doctor. Also, avoid bare foot walking and use soft sole shoes. Plantar fascia stretching exercises might be useful too.

Hope i have answered your question.

If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.

No, not mostly in mornings, but yes in the sole also. I do drink and smoke, and I am barefoot all day except when I go outside.
I drink very little, but used to drink A LOT. I quit smoking for 4 months and it did not improve

Brief Answer:
Follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thank you for writing back.
First of all, I would suggest to avoid alcohol and smoking.
Now, though plantar fascitis pain is most severe in morning, still it cannot be ruled out as there is pain in sole. Rather some simple precautions can be taken. Wearing soft padded shoes and avoiding barefoot walking are very useful. What you can also do is alternate hot and cold compression with ice cold water and hot water alternatively 2-3 times a day. Plantar fascia stretching exercises should help too.
Alongwith the above, neuropathic pain has to be ruled out. Hence, I would suggest blood sugar and uric acid to be tested. Also, an Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity testing should be done for both lower limbs.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
