Question: I have been on Thyronorm for a while now. 75 mcg. I observed my hair loss increased and after testing for my thyroid i reduced my dosage to 50 mcg.

Is there any other medication that I can take to address my thyroid problem

I recently did a complete test for thyroid along with Ft3 and Ft4. Below are my results. As you can see my TSH is now more than 10. What dosage should be I be taking now? How can I reduce my hair fall?

I am also taking zincovit and cod liver oil supplements

TOTAL TRIIODOTHYRONINE (T3) C.L.I.A 65 ng/dl
TOTAL THYROXINE (T4) C.L.I.A 6.6 µg/dl
THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE (TSH) C.L.I.A 10.38 µIU/ml
FREE TRIIODOTHYRONINE (FT3) C.L.I.A 2.17 pg/ml
FREE THYROXINE (FT4) C.L.I.A 1.08 ng/dl
ANTI MICROSOMAL ANTIBODY (AMA) C.L.I.A 24 IU/mL Negative : <34

Brief Answer:
The dose for Thyronorm should be adjusted.

Detailed Answer:

Dear Ma'am Hi
Good afternoon.

I appreciate your concern for the hair loss and the high TSH level.

I have gone through your query and the uploaded thyroid function tests done on August 19th 2015.

Before I could suggest the reasons behind high TSH and hair fall, I would like to know the following:

1. Did you have the problem of hair loss before starting the treatment with Thyronorm?

2. For how long you have been taking (weeks or months) the prescribed Thyronorm?
3. Did you reduce its dosage as per the instruction from your doctor?
4. Do you have any other disease (like liver or heart problems)?

In order to check the efficacy of Thyronorm, the TSH level should be evaluated after 6-8 weeks of starting the treatment because it will take 2-3 months for your replaced hormone (Thyronorm) to stabilize once you have started the medications.

So, kindly provide the requested information.

Regards.

Hello Doctor,

THank you for response.

1. Did you have the problem of hair loss before starting the treatment with Thyronorm?

I have been on Thyronorm for nearly 7 years now. I started with 50mcg and was put on 75mcg after tests. 6 months before I left for a job to another country I was asked to take 75 msg 5 days a week and 50 mcg during the weekend as I was experiencing bloating and weight changes when I changed from 75 mcg to 50 mcg.

My then endocrinologist told me that the doses would have to be changed every few months as per my TSH level.

I started experiencing this hair fall/loss since past 5 - 6 months. At that time I was on 75 mcg.

Once I came back to 50 mcg I noticed that my hair fall reduced from previous time.

2. For how long you have been taking (weeks or months) the prescribed Thyronorm?

For around 7 years

3. Did you reduce its dosage as per the instruction from your doctor?

Yes. I have.

4. Do you have any other disease (like liver or heart problems)?

Not as per my knowledge. Are there any specific tests that needs to be taken to confirm this?

Brief Answer:
The dose of Thyronorm should be re adjusted.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am,
Thanks for your reply.
Noted the answers for the requested queries.

As a matter of fact, the response of thyroid hormone (Thyronorm) treatment is best monitored by measuring TSH level.
The measurement of TSH can indicate whether the patient is taking the correct dose or not?
If a patient is taking too much Thyronorm, the pituitary gland stops secreting TSH & thus its level falls, however if the dose is TOO low, TSH increases.

So, high level of TSH is suggestive of inadequate dosage of Thyronorm which is
common clinical problem & the most common cause for this phenomenon is poor patient compliance with their Thyronorm tablets.

Another possibility is decreased absorption of Thyronorm from the intestines.

In view of the above explanation I therefore advice you to consult your treating Endocrinologist to review your latest thyroid function tests and to re adjust the dose accordingly.

Beside, make sure that you take the Thyronorm tablet on an empty stomach & avoid taking other medications or food for 30–60 min afterwards for better absorption from the intestines.

Regarding the hair fall, it is a side effect due to Thyronorm, which can be minimized by either multivitamins with minerals like Zincovit or Minoxidil drops.

Hope to have answered your query.

Wishing you best of your health.
