Using Minocycline Tablet And Deriva Gel For Acne. What Are These Medicines And Their Side Effects?

Hi Doctor,
I am a 24 year old woman.
I have acne that was dormant for the last 2 years. It suddenly started reappearing around 2 months back. I started getting a lot of pimples and they left a lot of scars.
I consulted a dermatologist. She prescribed CNN 100 Minocycline tablet once a day, Deriva CMS gel at night and Zincovit tablet in the morning. She also prescribed Sebamed Cleansing foam for face wash.
My query is..is the Deriva CMS gel used to treat acne or for reduction of scars.
Also is the Minocycline tablet an antibiotic? Ive read somewhere that it is usually prescribed for a period of 6 months. Are there any side effects for this medicine? Also what does this medicine do for the skin?

Would appreciate your response.

Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
Deriva CMS is used to treat active acne. However, by virtue of reducing active acne, it prevents scarring secondarily.
Minocycline is an antibiotic belonging to tetracycyline group. It is usually given for a duration of 2-3 months depending on the response. Though it is a very good antibiotic to treat acne, it is associated with side effects like pigmentation, drug induced lupus, photosensitivity, auto immune hepatitis( liver abnormality) etc which are quite rare, though well known. Some doctors use it for a short duration and switch to topicals.
Hope this answered your doubt.
Take care.

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
Your doctor has written an appropriate prescription for acne.
Minocycline is an antibiotic added in acne to reduce the causative bacterisl count
Deriva cms is for acne lesions. It may reduce scars and marks to some extent as adapalene has a peeling action on skin.
With minocycline, one should avoid sun exposure as it ca. kead to pigmentation of skin
Derivaa cms can dry the skin.
As such both of these are completely safe.
Take care
