Question: I started suffering from running nose last Thursday. running nose had stopped in another 2 days but cold was there. Yesterday cold was mild yellowish. I had headache and felt temperature also. After taking Dispirin and Tea, felt better.
later purchased wikoryl and Dolo-650(paracetamol) tablets.
Yesterday evening I had temperature of 100 degree but my hands were cold.
Today morning, I am feeling bit heaviness in head. Also since day before yesterday I am having muscle pain on right upper Jaw. Not sure if it's due to cold or sleeping posture.
please let me know if you have any questions and should I continue above medicines and for how many days or if you can suggest any medicines.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

It sounds like you are having an upper respiratory tract infection which is just inflammation of the upper airway and nasal passages usually from a viral infection. They are usually sell limiting and peak in 1 to 3 days but can last up to two weeks. However, there are several hundred different viruses that can cause the symptoms. Most people will have nasal congestion, sneezing, throat irritation, cough, headache, and fevers. In addition most people will have a green or yellow mucus discharge with a postnasal drip and a red throat. Generally, the best way to prevent upper respiratory tract infections is to wash your hands frequently and a limit exposure to infect people such as kids. There is some new evidence that demonstrates probiotics might help. There is no special lab testingto diagnose upper respiratory tract infections. It is based on clinical findings.

I would recommend you to continue what you were doing. Instead of dispirin I would recommend getting Tylenol which is a better medication for fevers and pain. I would also recommend avoiding all tobacco smoke. You can try a humidifier at home. If you have a Netti pot I would recommend using it frequently. You can also use nasal saline irrigation. You can try salt water gargles. Cough drops will work great for sore throat. I would also recommend doubling your fluid intake. Antihistamines also work great. A small percentage of upper respiratory tract infections may develop worsening symptoms leading to secondary ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis, or Pneumonia. Antibiotics are not recommended. Only symptomatic treatment is recommended. The prognosis is excellent with expected full recovery usually in 5 to 7 days but sometimes up to two weeks. For smokers it can take an additional week to recover completely. Most importantly, good hand hygiene and frequent handwashing will prevent spread and re-inoculation.

If your fevers get higher and more frequent, or your symptoms worsen, you may want to seek a medical professional to get an antibiotic.

Brief Answer:
Sinarest and Ascoril. Hold off on Azee

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I do not think you need the Azee yet. If you continue to have fevers and you feel worse in about 5 days, then I would get the Azee.

I would try the Sinarest and the ascoril. If they both work well, continue them while you are feeling sick. If not, write back and we can discuss more options.

Double your fluid intake.
Wash your hands frequently, especially after sneezing, coughing, and blowing nose.
Symptoms can last up to 2 weeks.
I hope you get better soon.

Brief Answer:
No antibiotic yet

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

It sounds like you are improving without the antibiotic. If you are not have a temperature over 100.5 and you are feeling better, I would recommend not to take the antibiotic. Continue drinking plenty of fluids and getting plenty of rest.

I would recommend taking the antibiotic if it continues for over 7 days without any improvement. I would also recommend taking the antibiotic if there are temperatures greater then 100.5 that are sustained for more then an hour.

Overall it sounds like a viral illness.
