Question: Hi Doctor,

My daughter is 8.5 months old. She was sneezing badly and had little fever (approx 99) last sunday night when we took her to a doctor. Doctor had given sinarest AF and calpol drops (on need basis). We had given her sinarest AF (0.8 ml) three times a day for 4 days as suggested by the doctor and calpol only the first day. She was getting better but, since yesterday she is having a runny nose and crying a bit more than usual.

What shall we do? please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Continue Sinarest AF thrice daily. Use saline nasal drop.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days.

Your doctor has done the right thing by prescribing calpol and sinarest AF. Sinarest AF needs to be given thrice daily for the next few days. She possibly has developed nasal block (due to the nasal secretions) and that could be the reason she is crying more. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Hi Doctor,

Thanks for you reply.

As the crying of my daughter increased a bit more by the evening hence, we took her to the doctor again. On examining her, the doctor said that she had developed some fluid in her left ear due to the viral infection which she was having and he has prescribed Advent drops (2 ml twice daily) for 5 days along with continuing Sinarest AF and calpol (on need basis).

Also, he has said that she may develop loose motions due to this medicine for which he has suggested Enterogermina (one unit/bottle once a day).

How serious is this fluid in ear problem? Is it something to worry about or something common in babies? Any suggestions from your side would be helpful in this regard? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Treatment is proper

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Your doctor is right. The ear infection is called ASOM (acute suppurative otitis media).

Our ear has three parts: The external ear (upto the eardrum), the middle ear (having connection to the inner throat via Eustachian tube on each side) and the inner ear (containing the cochlea, the organ of hearing). Her catching cold has led to thickening of the mucus, thus blocking the Eustacian tube(s) which normalizes the air pressure outside (in the throat) and middle ear. The pressure differences in the middle ear is responsible for this fluid accumulation. The treatment is proper.

You also need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.

The doctor is also right about the possibility of loose stool.

Continue the suggested treatment and you need not worry.

Hi Doctor,
There seems to be no improvement in runny nose of my daughter. Her nose is running very frequently though she is not sneezing that frequently. Its been 7 days since we started giving sinarest (thrice a day since 4th Sep afternoon) but, runny nose still seems to be the same.

Also, she seems a bit uncomfortable as she is demanding to be clinging to us most of the time she is awake and crying a bit more than usual, this was not the case earlier when she was fine.

As of now we are giving her Sinarest AF 3 times (0.8 ml) and Advent drops ( 2 ml twice daily). Is there any requirement of change in treatment?

Brief Answer:
Can try Atarax

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Occasionally it does go on for slightly more than 7 days. The treatment is proper and needs to be continued. However, instead of Sinarest AF you can opt for Atarax Drops (Hydroxizine) 0.5 ml thrice daily for the next few days.
