Otitis media

What is Otitis media?

Otitis media is a bacterial or viral infection of the middle ear common in children. It may cause a high temperature, inability to feed in babies, lost of balance, coughing and a runny nose. Treatment involves pain relief. There is no evidence that antibiotics are of help unless there are serious underlying health problems, the child is under 3 months or there is no improvement after 4 days.

Consult an ENT Surgeon to get a proper diagnosis as this can be due to infection of the ear, otomycosis or impacted wax or just otitis externa.
Till then just take...

I have had otitis externa for three weeks and now it has developed into otitis media. I have neck stiffness, and nausea but no fever. My jaw also hurts. Are these symptoms contestant with a bad ear infection or could they be something more serious?

I ruptured my left eardrum after a nasty bout of otitis media about three weeks ago. I have taken the full course of Amoxicillin and it has stopped draining and there is no pain. The only problem I am having is severely decreased hearing and the "whooshing" sound of my heartbeat in my ear. I see an ENT the 21st. What are the odds this will heal on it's own?

doctor1 MD

you have a perforation in your eardrums , a condition known as otitis media .
advice - Do not put water in the ear. keep it dry. avoid ear drops. avoid cold items. take an antihistamine and a nasal spray. avoid swimming. protect yourself from allergens and protect your sinuses .

My daughter 4 yrs old is on treatment for otitis media for the past 5 months. She has been on antibiotics for 6 times and now she is on the 7th time. She has allergic rhinitis as well for which she is on sinoclear, nasonex, claratin andclarithromycin right now. I am worried about the number of times she is on antibiotics. She has started her schooling from april 2013.

doctor1 MD

I had ringing in my right ear last night. I woke up this morning and I can t hear from my right ear. My physician friend looked this am and said I had a retracted tympanic membrane. I tried nasosynephrine spray and lying on my right side to see if it would drain in my eustachian tube but I got no relief. He called in some high dose steroids and an antiviral and said I should get an MRI and see an ENT. What do you think?

doctor1 MD

Ear pain/infection comes alternatively. When takes medicine(ciproflexacin) It gets stopped. But comes further after few months. When it s high bad hearing is condition and heavy pain occurs. It feels like ear is blocked and the wax from ear gets excess and clotted.
