Hi my daughter is 17 years old and is suffering from a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes/swollen tonsils, and white patchy mouth sores with swollen gums that appear bruised in areas. What could this be and how can i treat it? Went to an after hours clinic today inwhich a strep test was done. It was negative. They put her on penicillian for infection.

Thanks for your query.

Symptoms of sore throat, swollen lymph nodes/tonsils, mouth sores could all mean a viral or bacterial infection. Most often these symptoms appear due to a viral infection of the upper /lower respiratory tract.

A common cold or cough also may present with similar symptoms.

When a person has fever/infection there is loss of appetite, dehydration, inadequate diet which lead to drying of the oral cavity, causing ulcers in the mouth and swollen gums.

Since streptococcal infections are very commonly associated with sore throat and other symptoms, the doctor has investigated for it.Since it is negative for strepto, I would go by viral infections and other bacterial infections like staphylococcal, anaerobic bacteria, etc.. to be a possibility.

Here are a few suggestions for her:

1.Warm saline gargles, 3 to 4 times a day will give a soothing effect on the throat, fight infection and reduce irritation.

2. Antibiotics of the Penicillin group are considered most effective in throat infections , since she i already on it, she must complete the full course of the drug.

3. Drink lots of water and fluids, to keep herself hydrated, this is very effective to control the sores and prevent dehydration.

4. A course of Multivitamins of the Vit C & B complex would be effective in treating the mouth sores and gum bleeding and prevent them.

5. A bland diet, with soups, salads, XXXXXXX leafy vegetables and fruits will be good.Small frequent meals will be helpful.

The swollen lymphnodes and tonsils are expected to spontaneously resolve in a week or two when the infection subsides.

Hope this answers your query, I am available for follow ups as well.
