My 12 year old son has an infected toe (from trimming his nails poorly). Tests can back positive for moderate growth of staphylococcus aureus . While at the doctor he was running. 100 degree fever. Doctor did a strep teat that came back positive on the rapid test. He has been prescribed Amoxicillin and bactroban. Could the staph and strep be related? Is staph resistant to Amoxicillin ?

doctor1 MD

Hi there.

There are various strains of Staphylococcus and some may be resistant to Amoxycillin but Bactroban ointment is very good against Staphylococcus and even the dangerous MRSA type. Amoxycillin is good against Streptococcus sore throat. Kindly hydrate your child well. Give balanced diet...

Did I have rheumatic fever? I never went back after my last massive dose of antibiotics (which cured all), but I had positive strep test, extremely high white blood cell count, swollen throat, bloody nose, mucous in eyes, blood in stool , lesions on my arms and legs that wouldn t heal, a horrible rash on my upper thighs, and a constant fever. This went on for weeks until I finally went to doctor for the antibiotics, but should I get an EKG? I m worried about future problems with rheumatic fever...if that s what it was. My doctor wouldn t diagnose this, just treated it.

doctor1 MD

Dear

Before considering it as Rheumatic fever, you should take a course of antibiotic sensitive to streptococci. Get an ASO titre done for suspicion of rheumatic fever.Along with antibiotic take nasal decongestant, anti inflammatory and analgesic with B complex

Take care

HI, i'm 33, female, non smoker non drinker. i've been sick for around 6 wks now. Initially i thought i had a bad cold, but most likely was the flu as i was runnig high fevers and completely in bed for 4 days straight. for the remainder of the week, i developed a terrible wet cough and felt incredibly lethargic. the following week i visited my nurse in teh office, and a strep test proved positive. she put me on amoxicillin for 10 days. i had both my children and husband checked to make sure, all are negative for strep. 10 days later, no more sore throat, but i'm stil incredibly tired, and 3 days later came down with a fever again and cough started getting worse again. fever lasted around 2 days, then broke and i seemed to be getting better, but sure enough 5 days later i was sick again with the nasty cough still there as well as fevers, bodyache, runny nose etc. i went back to the doctors, and he said there was a little congestion in my lungs. he prescribed me a z-pack. i'm on day 3 today, feeling very nauseous form the meds, but overall no improvement. stilll coughing, still having body aches, still having a runny nose. help pls!

doctor1 MD

Sounds like you could have a bacteria that has some resistance to the antibiotic you are taking. What happens is you take the antibiotic...if kills the weak bacteria...and over time you feel better. Once the anitbiotic is stopped...then the strong bacteria...that weren't killed by the antibiotic...

I have 6 bumps across the back of my tongue. The roof of my mouth aches at times. The left side of throat (lypmp node is swollen). I get hoarse after talking too long. Finally got a doctor to do strep test. It was positive. My first symptoms was red raw small bumps around the outer part of my tongue all the way round. Gargle with salt water. Dissipated. About 4-5 days later went back to doctor with complaints of feeling bad. This is when strep test done, Wednesday. Rocephin shot and Rx. Cefdiner300mg given. The roof of my mouth still hurts. Really no change. I do not feel as bad such as flu like symtoms which occurred when my throat started hurting. Does strep cause the bumps. No puss pockets noted just raised bumps. These may have been there all along since they are so far back on my tongue.

Could I have had a viral infection causing the bumps that got infected?

doctor1 MD

Hello,
The bumps are ulcers ,which developed due to-poor oral hygiene maintenance, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, anxiety.
I would advice you to maintain oral hygiene well.
Use tongue scrapers to clean your tongue.
Take plenty of fluids and nutritious diet.
Vitamin b12,iron supplements...

Hi. My daughter is 8 years old and we recently found out that she has ulcers inside her vagina , along the vaginal walls, she also has swelling that you can t even see inside the hole , it s blocked. She has been in pain for over 4 weeks, she can t even touch to wipe herself as she is also raw at the opening. We were told she tested positive for Strep , so she had to take antibiotics 2x a day for 10 days. We have also done fungal treatments creams and a pill for adults you only take once(can t remember what is was called) and nothing has helped her. The doctor has taken 3 Extreamly painful swabs and she is testing neg for everything else. She said if it s viral she will have to call in the big guns , what does that mean, what could this be?

doctor1 MD

Hello ma'am.

I cam understand your frustration, especially because a small child has to endure what no human should have to.

When/if your daughter tested positive for strep, I am surprised why she did not respond/rexover with the antibiotics that were prescribed.

Unfortunately despite treatment...

My 10 yr old daughter has a pea-sized lump to the left of her knee cap. She had an ultrasound today, and the dr. wasn t sure what it was. It hurts sometimes, mainly when she runs or after the Dr. probed the area. They don t think it s a cyst or a lymph node...she also tested postive for strep titre in her bloodwork, although has no symptoms of strep.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

You have not mentioned the duration of the pea-size lump and whether it is increasing in size ever since you noticed it. These information shall help in my guidance of the case.

If the doctor was not able to give a definite conclusion on the ultrasound then the best...

My son has had hives for the last 6 months (currently on Allegra 2x day, but still have break through hives), positive strep test in Dec and Jan (along with intensified OCD, over emotion and irritable behavior) and today received lab results of ASO of 457 and Anti dNase 888. 2 weeks ago the above behavior resurfaced again out the blue both at home an at school. The rapid strep test and culture were negative but the doc still started him on Keflex due to past strep in Dec and Jan and hives continuing. We have 3 doses of Keflex left and not much important in the OCD, irritability and emotions. He has been diagnosed with Sensory and ADHD but everything has been under control the last few months. Waiting the doctor to call back and I am assuming more antibiotics. But I am the one who suggested the labs and the doc researched and agreed. Just want to make sure we are no missing anything.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Continue the medication for hives and ADHD as prescribed by his doctors.

Look for any associated allergen which is causing recurrent hives.

Some time OCD is aggravated by streptococcal infections and it is know as PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune...

I went to the doctor's to get a strep test done and I didn't witness the nurse wash her hands (she wasn't wearing gloves either) when she administered the swab in my mouth. I am very afraid of germs but didn't say anything. Is it likely that I will get an infection from the swab?

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
NO!

Detailed Answer:
HI,

There is no way you will get an infection or contaminated by a germ just from that gesture. Even if any germ got in, the digestive tract would be able to neutralize any such germ for it must be in very small volumes. There is truly nothing to be concerned...

Hello,

I can understand your being worried with your daughter being sick.

The C-Reactive Protein (PCR) can become elevated anytime there is infection or inflammation going on in the body, but it does not specify what the cause is.

After waiting 5 days with a migraine, dizziness and nausea, I thought I picked up a virus. On the 5 day I saw the white spot on one tonsil and bleeding on the other tonsil. I thought maybe it was strep instead and went to see my doctor, they gave me prednisone and a strep test. An hour or two after taking the prednisone the swelling went down and the white spot when away... So, was it more likely a virus? And the white was pus... I know I will probably get the answer in a few days, but it's bugging me and I just would like an educated opinion. This is the first time I am taking prednisone for something that isn't a massive allergy.
