Question: Hi! I was wondering why my stomach has shooting pains in them like it's where my overvies is. I have been on mirena since April 2008 so I am getting close to my 5 years. But idk if the birth control is causing that. Plus I have gained like 15 pounds like suddenly it kinda freaks me out because I gained it so rapidly. I haven't ate more than usual at all! I don't have constant pains and I also get like twitches like your eye gets sometimes that's the same feeling I get in my stomach sometimes. It's weird!

Thanks for writing to us.
Since you have been on the Mirena since the past 4 -5 years, and have never experienced problems , it is highly unlikely that the symptoms you have described are because of birth control.
Birth control is associated with weight gain sometimes, but not the drastic amount that you mention, and it is definitely not sudden, and not towards the fag end of the device you are using.
Stress, anxiety and irregular eating habits might cause sudden weight gain. Its not about how much you eat, but the timings and the quality of your meal that matters. Binge eating, skipping meals, eating foods with high glycemic index etc are some culprits.
Fluctuations of thyroid hormones might be a cause.
Depression causes sudden weight gain at times.
Certain medications are known to cause weight gain, but you have mentioned that you are not taking any.
Polycystic ovaries are common in your age group, and it is a condition known to be associated with obesity and weight gain and impairment in blood sugars.
About the twitches in your abdomen, there are a few causes for that also

The muscles in your lower abdomen might cause the twitch due to dehydration, stress, anxiety or exertion, and if you are a lean person, these maybe easily felt by you. Local blood vessel pulsations can be felt as a twitching, but you can diagnose this, as they coincide with your heart beat.

The bowel / colon movements - normally called peristalsis, might be felt by some persons as a twitching in the lower abdomen.

The shooting pains over the ovaries is not normal and might indicate some kind of pelvic infection, cysts in the ovaries or disease in the appendix etc.

Since you have non specific symptoms, which might be due to a variety of reasons, please consult your Gynecologist for a complete pelvic and abdominal check up, reassessment of the Mirena, as well as an ultrasound and other blood tests that she might feel are needed based on above conditions.

Take care and feel free to ask for further clarifications.

My mom is having some memory loss suddenly. I m talking Wednesday night she was fine and Thursday morning should couldn t remember a LOT of stuff from the last couple of months. She was in the cleanse phase of a diet she was on and she had really bad diarrhea Wednesday night. Is this just dehydration or should we be more concerned and take her to the ER? If its dehydration, will symptoms reverse? How long does in take?

i was diagnosised with thyroiditis 3 years ago. I have been on synthroid for almost 3 years. But before that, I had an infection and was placed on oral doxycycline. we have a pool and i was out in the pool all weekend with sunscreen on. Then my daughter and i went to the beach, stayed about 2 hours, walking around and sitting on the beach. no problems. then on our way home, i started to get sick, nausa and diarrhea. by the end of the night, i was having chills and teeth chattering. thought it was from dehydration, but i was hydrated through out the day. ever since then, every time i am in the sun and get a slight redness, i go through the same thing again. it has been going on for 3 1/2 years. no one seems to know what is the problem. i have been tested for lupus, and so far it has come back negagtive. I also had a ct scan to rule out carsonoid syndrom. That was negative also. I am going to be tested again in december for lupus. not sure if anyone else has anything similar to this. my doctor doesn t know where to go from here, but she keeps trying to find something by reading.... so for now, i mainly hibernate in the house on hot days. boo boo, cuz i like the sun! also something i forgot, I am on hormone replacement and it has helped with alot of the red face with being in the heat. so who knows what is the problem... any suggestions?

I was discharged from a hospital after an 8 day stay for an esophageal tear on Tuesday. I did not require surgery....instead it was 7 days of no food or liquids orally, 2 broad spectrum IV antibiotics, saline, and Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium as my electrolytes were very low as a result of dehydration. I had vomited for a 20 hour period. The rupture healed nicely on its own. Morphine for pain and something for the chronic nausea. I am home now, but not really feeling better. I still feel nauseous (the smell of food can be triggering as can movement) I have vomited twice after a spell of uncontrollable shaking, followed by vomiting and then profuse sweating. I think one episode was a gall bladder attack since I have a history. But, it happened again last night. My stomach in general is bothering me (bloated, gassy, achy). I am on a liquid diet, but I am struggling even with that. I also continue to feel very weak and my mood is low. Thoughts?
