Peristalsis

What is Peristalsis?

Peristalsis is a type of movement of contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles which help to move. In the intestines this Peristalsis movement propagates the food and helps food to pass through entire digestive tract. In reptiles this kind of movement helps to move ahead as we see in Earthworms. In Peristalsis movement circular muscles do contraction and relaxation in a wave like motion.

Hello, Doctor - My name isXXXX and I reside in XXXXXXX. I have cerebral palsy and am now confined to a wheelchair (I can no longer weight-bear through my legs due to the CP/muscular contractions). Because of the CP, I have a "lazy bowel" and my peristalsis is very slow. To keep things moving, I am currently taking 2 Dulcolax tablets every second day (early in the morning) to keep things moving. However, peristalsis seems to be slowing down even further (maybe because I am now laxative-dependent). I had a decent bowel motion this morning (even though I didn't take any laxatives last night. You also need to know I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (and am taking 2 Trajentamet capsules a day - one at breakfast, one at dinner. My question is this:- What would you recommend I should take to enhance peristalsis? I've just been talking to a friend, and she recommended Normafibe (granules) - 2 heaped teaspoons a day with plenty of water. Normafibe is a fibre supplement, to be taken with food. Would Normafibe clash with Dulcolax tablets? And would there be any ill-effects with my diabetes medication? Please advise. I look forward to hearing from you.

I previously lodged a question regarding my wife's presumed food poisoning from chicken about 3 weeks ago and the diagnosis was Gastroenteritis. My wife has been in hospital as she suffered Hypokalemia from chronic vomiting and diorreah. Her potassium levels while still unstable have been raised with the aid of syrup fed intravenously however she has now been left with Paralytic Ileus and her stomach is still as badly bloated as when first admitted. The problem here is she has a broken hip so is very immobile and this latest issue has made her considerably weaker. Whilst her fecie cultures have been negative ( I assume because of the antibiotics given prior to admission) her white blood cells are in the range of between 17,000 and 21,000 and she also has high Neutrophils and Monocytes . She has not vomited for several days and today commenced consuming clear soup however her diarreah is still watery and dark green. She has had ct scans and various blood tests however the hospital is unable to locate any infection. My concern is how to overcome the paralytic Ileus and also her elevated blood count. She is expected to be discharged in a couple of days provided she keeps her food down and her potassium level is stable. Any advice and possible diagnosis would be much appreciated .

I have tried warm water with lemon juice in the morning, adding more fiber through apples, senna, triphala, tablespoon of olive oil in the morning, taking magnesium oxide before bedtime, running, drinking lots of water (urine clear). Not sure what I should do at this point?

My nephew who in 2000 was 21 years old. One morning he woke up with a bout of vomiting. He felt better. However after that he started feeling uneasy in the stomach. He feeling early satiety, bloating etc. VEndoscpy test was found negative. All laboratory tests were normal. However barim test showed delayed gastric emptying. He was told that he was suffeirng from lack of perstaltic movement in the stomach, the food was not being digested properly and hence food could not pass to small intestines. He was a hlthy young boy full of energy. It is now 10 years he has been having this problem He has lost a lot weight. We had been to India to consult gastroenterologist who said he had idiopathic gastroparesis or since he voited on getting up, it seems thee was a virus which had infected him. Apparaently the virus has attached his stomch nerves and damaged some of them. Hence lack of peristaltic movement. Can you advice any solution tohis problem. All CT and other tests are normal except for barium meal. His stomach has now sagged. Thank you.

Please help. I have been suffering from acute pseudoobstruction on a monthly basis for about a year now and the pain is becoming unbearable. I was diagnosed with lupus about 20 years ago and have experienced hemolytic anemia, a pulmonary hemmorrhage, and nephritis. 'in the last 3 years, my lupus has been attacking my GI system, I have no peristalsis in my esophagus, horrible GERD and heartburn, and these periodic episodes of pseudoobstructiob that now include vomiting. I have lost 30 lbs in the last 3 years and my last WBC count was 1.9! My rheumatologist and hematologist have been trying to help but my GI doc is semi-retired and does not seem to care that I am suffering. I am begining to think that my GI symptoms might not be related to my lupus. Is it possible that it could be something else? A tapeworm maybe? Please help

Hello Doctor,

I am having peristaltic movements of intestines. Excess farting, even though my stool is clear. I am having normal diet. I am 24 years old. I was suffering from urticaria for a few years which caused me to maintain a healthy diet. What is the remedy? Do I have to get a check up done. If yes then what? This usually happens during the afternoon time pre and post lunch time in office which is very embarrassing.
