How Long Does Amoxicillin Take To Show Its Effect?

Question: My daughter was given omoxacillin yesterday due to an infection of her throat, due to seasonal allergies. My question is, how long does it take for omoxacillin to take effect? And how will I know that it's working? It's been 24 hours and she has taken 2, 5ml doses and still has a fever how long until the fever subsides? Thanks.

It takes at least 48 to 72 hours for the antibiotics like amoxicillin to overwhelm the bacterial infection if the bacteria are susceptible to amoxicillin. If the fever subsides after 48 hours along with improvement of the symptoms associated with the sore throat then you can be positive that the antibiotics are working. If the fever persists after 72 hours then you should consult your doctor to take a throat swab culture and probably for a change in the empiric therapy.
