Does Excessive Masturbation Lead To Erectile Dysfunction?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,
I'm dealing with erectile dysfunction (during sex and masturbation) that started couple of months ago as loss of libido and generally weak erections during sex and long refractory periods. I can still get an erection when with a partner but need constant stimulation if not, I lose it. I feel my porn habits might have contributed to this in some way? I've only recently started to get mild morning erections again (an improvement?) More than anything I'm worried about having a venous leakage since most young men on forums online latch on to that as an explanation for their problem. I don't think I've done anything that would bring about a leakage? I'm 25 yrs old.

P.S In the past two weeks I've been having mild pain in the prostate and frequent urination (prostatitis?).

Brief Answer:
Performance related anxiety, Possible UTI

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

At your age in absence of any organic cause , erectile dysfunction is usually mind related and is due to stress or anxiety. Applying lifestyle changes can help in further improvement. These include Regular exercise and meditation , A high protein diet supplemented by a multivitamin, Avoiding alcohol and smoking.
Sidenafil (Viagra) can be prescribed by your doctor for sustainable erections as per need. As for the pain in prostate or supra pubic region, Please get a urinalysis done to rule out a possible infection. If evidence is found culture sensitivity testing should be done and be treated with antibiotics accordingly. Doppler Ultrasound of Penis can be done to look for the possibility of venous leak in consult with your doctor though its not the primary test that we go for and is resorted to in the end when no other cause is found and empiric treatment has failed.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

Thanks Dr. XXXXXXX I also wanted to ask if Sidenafil would be a permanent prescription or something my doctor might recommend to kick-start things again? I wouldn't want to have to rely on drugs permanently.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

If you were my patient I would see if there is improvement initially with counseling, sex therapy, supplementation and lifestyle changes. Sildenafil can be added if the above alone aren't sufficient. The ideal situation would be to improve without having to rely on sildenafil.

So do people who take Sidenafil (young men) ever improve gradually on their own to the point they no longer need it?

Brief Answer:
Yes, they do.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Yes, they do improve to the point they no longer need it.

Its just that in the absence of any peripheral vascular disease or diabetes or hormonal causes, the majority of cases of E.D in young men are related to stress and anxiety i.e Performance related anxiety.
