Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: My daughter is 16 and she has pcos. Her menstrual cycle is yet to commence. Doctor has prescribed me rate 10 mg twice daily for 5 days.
What is this medicine used for?
Will it treat her pcos problem?
After how many days should I expect her cycle to start if she starts her medication tomorrow?
Is there any time at which she should have her dose?

Brief Answer:
It is a hormonal tablet, helps to induce periods, does not treat PCOS.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I think there is a typing error in your query.
You mean Meprate I think.
This is a hormonal tablet.
In girls with PCOS, there is basic hormonal imbalance.
Meprate is taken for 5 days, and then, on stopping, she will have her period.
After taking 5 days of tablets, she will bleed within maximum 7 days.
She can have it twice a day, no specific time.
It does not cure PCOS, just helps to have normal periods.
The mainstay of therapy for PCOS is Metformin and weight loss.
What is her current height and weight ?
How has her PCOS been diagnosed ?
Was a pelvic ultrasound scan done ?
Hormonal tests - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone ?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.
